RGR Technologies has developed products that are less costly to manufacture as price is the determining factor when mining companies procure equipment and not local content
Local demand lower than rest of Africa
Published: 05 Aug 22
The demand for valves specified for mining applications in the rest of Africa is much higher than demand in South Africa, says valve manufacturer RGR Technologies MD Marinus Ras. “New underground mines are starting to come on stream in certain parts of the continent, where greenfield construction and operational projects are fairly numerous.”
AFS offers better lead times compared with those associated with imported products, by carrying more stock of components that generally have a lengthy lead time
Commodities surge boosts demand
Published: 05 Aug 22
The global increase in commodity prices is motivating local mines to spend capital on new and existing projects, while the long delivery times of imported products have shifted their focus to South African-manufactured valves, says slurry-related valves manufacturer Abrasive Flow Solutions (AFS) GM Donald Morrison. He notes that AFS’ diaphragm, wedge gate, pinch and knife gate valves are in high demand from the mining industry this year, but manufacturing challenges persist, owing to the Ukraine-Russia war, commercial flight shortages, shipping container scarcity and the fickle post-Covid-19 business environment.

Soil compactor offers high value with efficiency
Published: 05 Aug 22
One of South Africa’s largest compaction machine suppliers ELB Equipment offers clients the Ammann ARS 122 soil compactor, which is an industry leader in compaction efficiency. “The Ammann ARS 122 soil compactor – from Swiss manufacturer Ammann Group - provides outstanding productivity and reliability. The powerful engine and heavy-duty hydrostatic drive of the wheels ensures great traction and travel performance at lower operating cost. The roller is suitable for compaction of a wide range of soil, from silt to crushed stones,” explains ELB Equipment earthmoving and construction sales manager Keon Kardolus.
Material ideal for sustainable, DIY construction
Published: 05 Aug 22
Locally manufactured Fibertex Universal do-it-yourself (DIY) materials – from construction materials supplier Fibertex South Africa - provide sustainable solutions to multiple drainage, filtration, separation and containment issues in gardens, driveways, patios and ponds. Fibertex Universal performs excellently as a separation geotextile between sand and stone to prevent intermixing of layers; as a separation material for root control and as a stabilisation fabric for under-paving to prevent sagging and rutting.
Cape Town rolls out pilot project to give QR codes, residence certificates to informal homes
Published: 05 Aug 22
The City of Cape Town’s Informal Settlements Department have marked a thousand structures in the Bosasa Phase 2 development in Mfuleni with a Quick Response (QR) code and city-specific paint. Field maps have also been created to indicate the associated number of each structure.
BMW adds i4 and iX3 to local EV portfolio, mulling electrified vehicle production at Rosslyn
Published: 05 Aug 22
BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) range with the addition of the i4 and iX3. The BMW i4 is a four-door gran coupé and the German carmaker’s first purely electric model focused squarely on driving dynamics from the outset.
Developed countries’ EV uptake strategies may be unsuitable for SA, owing to ‘significant’ wealth disparity, warns Frost & Sullivan
Published: 05 Aug 22
It is impossible to draw a direct comparison between South Africa and other countries that have adopted strategies to push the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs), warns Frost & Sullivan research director Craig Parker.  He says that South Africa’s economic structure and demographic profile are unique, with a significant disparity in wealth.
ITSSA to disband as project has realised its mandate
Published: 05 Aug 22
The Intelligent Transport Society of South Africa (ITSSA) has disbanded, as it has fulfilled its mandate, says CEO Dr Paul Vorster. An ITSSA annual general meeting in July confirmed a decision taken by the society’s board in June to close the project.

New solution helps mines achieve 'optimal' blasting results
Published: 05 Aug 22
Blasting technology and services company Bulk Mining Explosives (BME) has launched the next generation of its XPLOLOG blasting control real-time data solution to help mines achieve optimal blasting results to support mining efficiency. “It is important to have quick access to data on drill holes, explosives and other blast-related indices to ensure quality blasting on a regular and consistent basis. If blast engineers and management can see the progress of blast preparation in real time, they can respond quicker to deviations that might compromise the control and fragmentation of each blast,” says BME Software Development product manager Christiaan Liebenberg.
