Major global utilities announce joint intent to scale renewable capacity by 2030

The Utilities for Net Zero Alliance (Uneza) has adopted a roadmap to 2030, targeting a total increase of renewable energy capacity within their portfolios to 749 GW by 2030, an increase of 2.5 times relative to 2023. The alliance members’ joint renewables ambition was announced this week alongside a grid infrastructure action plan.
GoviEx in talks with Niger govt on Madouela start date

TSX-V listed GoviEx Uranium is in discussions with the government of Niger regarding the start of mining operations after having received notice that it must begin mining at its Madaouela uranium project by July 3, or risk having its mine permit revoked. The company says it is committed to developing the project and is working with the Nigerien government towards a mutually beneficial solution that complies with applicable law and protects the company’s rights.
Goldplat receives generators for its South African operations

Aim-listed Goldplat reports that diesel generators have arrived at its operations in South Africa, and that their commissioning will be finalised by the end of April. The company points out that, during the third quarter of the current financial year, its operations have lost 6% of total operating hours available owing to electricity supply cuts and infrastructure related issues, lower than the time lost in the previous calendar year of more than 20%.

Independent commodity research group CPM Group managing partner Jeffrey Christian has dispelled some of the common myths in the platinum market, which can lead to bad investment decisions on the part of producers, investors, governments and other financing sources. “There are high costs to making financial decisions based on a desired future rather than a realistically probable future based on an erroneous understanding of present market conditions and probable outcomes,” he explains in a market alert issued on April 19.
Gates Foundation, EIB launch capital for women entrepreneurs pilot in Kenya

Philanthropy organisation the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and development finance institution the European Investment Bank (EIB) have launched a €30-million microfinance programme for women entrepreneurs in Kenya. The new partnership aims to strengthen women’s economic power in Kenya by tackling key barriers to financial inclusion. The €30-million microfinance programme in Kenya is backed by €15-million from EIB Global and financing from financial services firm KCB Bank Kenya.
Research group reports that the latest El Niño had a significant impact on South Africa

A South African research group has reported that the 2023/24 El Niño phenomenon was the fourth strongest yet recorded, and that it had a noticeable impact on South Africa. The research team, designated the El Niño Southern Oscillation Reference Group (ENSO-RG), was convened by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s Applied Centre for Climate and Earth System Science. Elections highlighted as a concern for SME owners, but also promises change

Almost half, or 49%, of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) business owners who responded to the Fourth Quarter 2023 SME Confidence Index by specialist SME financier Business Partners said they were concerned that the imminent risk of economic turbulence and protest action during the election season would impact their operations. While the SME owners said the social climate ahead of the May elections was cause for concern, about 33% of the respondents said the elections would bring about much-needed change, said Business Partners impact investing executive GM David Morobe.

ASX-listed Catalyst Metals reports that the entire remaining substantial shareholding held by Hancock Prospecting in Catalyst Metals’ ordinary shares has been acquired by directors and senior management of Catalyst and institutional investors. Sayona divests completely from Troilus

ASX-listed lithium producer Sayona Mining has divested about 19.2-million shares in TSX-listed Troilus Gold at C$0.63 a share through a block trade facilitated by Desjardins Capital Markets. The transaction yielded gross proceeds of about C$12.1-million, which have been redirected towards the development of the Moblan lithium project and the expansion of operations at North American Lithium (NAL) in Québec, Canada.
