 The United States is re-evaluating the strictest elements of a ban on Russian diamonds from the Group of Seven major democracies, after opposition from African countries, Indian gem polishers and New York jewellers, seven sources said. The sanctions package, agreed in December and including a ban across the European Union, represents one of the industry's biggest shakeups in decades.

The Ngqura container terminal TPT starts financial year off with increases in bulk, container volumes

State-owned ports manager Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has recorded a 10% year-on-year increase in container volumes moved across all 19 of its terminals in the first six weeks of the 2024/25 financial year. Bulk volumes and break-bulk volumes were also up by 5% and 17%, respectively, compared with the first six weeks of the prior financial year.

A collective effort was apparent on Friday when Minerals Council South Africa, the Council for Geoscience and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) spoke on the same platform to promote a return to growth in the shrinking South African mining industry. Minerals Council South Africa CEO Mzila Mthenjane, Council for Geoscience CEO Mosa Mabuza, Junior Exploration & Mining Leadership Forum chairperson Errol Smart, who is also the CEO of Orion Minerals, IDC junior mining fund’s Siyabonga Mahlangu and many others showed common thought and vision on what must be done. ESG key as investors back gold ETPs, metals funds – Tabula

Gold exchange-traded products (ETPs) and metals funds are expected to benefit the most from positive flows into the commodities sector this year, with an environmental, social and governance (ESG) focus crucial to maximising inflows, research from European exchange-traded fund provider Tabula Investment Management shows. The study by Tabula found that 84% of professional investors expect positive flows into the almost $90-billion European-listed physical gold ETP sector this year. About 17% of those surveyed said they expect these flows to be “strong”.
Scrap metals Get Steel invites comment on proposed foundry project in Benoni

Local steel processing company Get Steel has invited interested and affected parties to submit comments on a draft scoping report into the refurbishment of the Naledi Foundry, in Benoni, Gauteng. The company also intends to install additional infrastructure and equipment to establish a new billet and precision casting foundry on the remainder of the site.
Development finance agency highlights Africa’s infrastructure needs and opportunities

The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), which exists to catalyse private-sector investment in African infrastructure, on Friday released its latest report, State of Africa’s Infrastructure Report 2024: The infrastructure imperative: Igniting Africa’s Industrial Renaissance. This found that the continent had an “unprecedented opportunity” to impel its development by bringing its substantial renewable energy resources, and solutions for its deficient infrastructure, into alignment. “The report is not just about identifying challenges; it’s about unlocking the immense potential that lies within our collective resolve,” stressed AFC president and CEO Samaila Zubairu. “The State of Africa’s Infrastructure Report is a call to action for stakeholders across the continent to collaborate for a smarter, more targeted, and better coordinated investment approach.”
Petco recycling bins Tshwane’s first separation-at-source project in a public space signals success

A separation-at-source recycling campaign, called S@S, at Tshwane’s public Fountains Valley Resort – a collaboration between the City of Tshwane and producer responsibility organisation Petco – is being described by officials as a success, with plans to extend it to other resorts and public areas in the city. Since February, visitors to the Fountains Valley Resort have been greeted by 12 large colour-coded and labelled recycling bins as part of the city’s first S@S recycling campaign in a public space.
Glencore's head office Glencore expands adherence to standards, reporting frameworks to ensure sustainability

Global diversified miner Glencore’s emissions and energy use increased in 2023, but the group continues to make strides in managing its operations sustainably and according to ever-evolving standards. Glencore’s total energy use last year was 202 PJ, compared with 194 PJ in 2022. Renewable energy sources delivered 5.4% of Glencore’s total energy needs in 2023, compared with 7.6% in 2022.
The cleared site of a building collapse in George George building collapse rescue, recovery operations wrapped up

Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell has confirmed that the rescue and recovery operation at the site of a building collapse, in George, has been concluded. More than 1 000 rescue, support and volunteer workers carried out the 260-hour operation, which saw more than 6 000 t of rubble carefully removed to enable rescue workers to search for survivors.
