Advisory and analytics firm Frost & Sullivan, a global strategy consulting and market intelligence firm with a long-standing presence in Africa will again be represented by its partner and Africa CEO Hendrik Malan at this year’s Enlit Africa 2024, which will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from May 21 to 23.  For the past 24 years, Malan has dedicated himself to understanding the Africa region and its dynamics.
Conditions still challenging, but contractors report noticeable uptick – MBA North

Last year was one of the most challenging years the Master Builders Association (MBA) North has ever experienced, with many of its long-standing members entering business rescue or closing their doors, says MBA North executive director Mohau Mphomela. The 120-year-old employers’ body serves the construction industry in Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Many of its members are smaller, family-owned businesses.

With ballooning foot traffic, demonstrated by an increase in attendance of 81% from 2022 to 2023, the organisers of this year’s Enlit Africa anticipate a “bumper event that will be attended by global dignitaries and industry leaders”. The Enlit Africa 2024 will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from May 28 to 30.

A standard skidding operation evolved into an opportunity for heavy lifting solutions provider Mammoet to showcase its ability to reduce the carbon footprint of civil projects while minimising disruption. Mammoet was tasked by multidisciplinary infrastructure company Stadsbader Contractors to lift and skid an 850 t concrete tunnel section 40 m beneath railway lines in Belgium.
Blue Energy, wheel maker ink green power deal

Local developer and operator of clean energy infrastructure Blue Energy Africa has signed a 20-year deal with Borbet South Africa (SA) for the procurement of power from renewable-energy sources. Founded in 1962 by Peter Wilhelm Borbet, the family-owned company has five locations in Germany, as well as one each in Austria and South Africa, with the latter in Gqeberha.

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi Botswana vows to protect interests in potential BHP-Anglo deal

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi vowed to protect the country’s interests, including its 15% stake in diamond giant De Beers, should BHP Group acquire Anglo American. Anglo, which rejected a BHP proposal valuing the mining company at about $39 billion, owns the other 85% of De Beers. Under the proposed deal, BHP — once a major diamond producer itself — said that De Beers would be put on a strategic review. Anglo, the only major miner with a big diamond business, has already been reviewing the future of units including De Beers.
A platinum bar Johnson Matthey forecasts lower palladium, rhodium deficits, but larger platinum deficit

Chemicals and sustainable technologies provider Johnson Matthey says the palladium and rhodium markets are likely to record smaller deficits this year, while platinum is likely to record a deficit of 600 000 oz on the back of lower primary supplies. It states in its latest yearly ‘PGM Market Report’ that an anticipated recovery in primary and secondary platinum group metal (PGM) production fell short of expectations in 2023.
Manuka raises cash to bring Mt Boppy into production

Exploration and development company Manuka Resources has announced an A$8-million capital raise that it plans to use to bring the Mt Bobby gold mine into production this year. The capital will be used to establish an onsite processing facility to recover gold from oxidised ore. First gold production is forecast for the fourt quarter.
Panama President-elect Jose Raul Mulino Panama President-elect rules out First Quantum talks until arbitration dropped

Panama's President-elect has ruled out talks with Canadian miner First Quantum Minerals until it drops multiple arbitration proceedings it has launched seeking billions of dollars in compensation from the government over a mine shutdown order. President-elect Jose Raul Mulino spoke about his plans for the major copper mine, once responsible for some 5% of Panama's economic activity and some 40% of First Quantum's revenue, in an interview with local news radio program Panama en Directo on Thursday.
