Rand Refinery donates R2m to seven Gauteng schools

As part of its commitment to education, precious metals refiner Rand Refinery has donated R2-million to seven primary and secondary schools in Gauteng. The company says this donation will be allocated towards refurbishments at, and procurement of modern educational tools by, the selected schools.
Red Rock to undertake work programmes at Burkina Faso project

Aim-listed Red Rock Resources’ Bilbale gold project, in Burkina Faso, holds “significant potential”, consultant Dr Willem J Smuts has noted in a report. Smuts recently undertook a site visit to the project and carried out several days of evaluation work to identify potential high-grade targets, as well as assess the amenability of the area to support scalable operations and quick-start operations.

Gold mining and exploration company Thor Explorations has reported a $24-million year-on-year decrease in revenue from $165.2-million in 2022 to $141.2-million for the year ended December 31, 2023. Thor operates the Segilola gold mine, in Nigeria, and also holds several mineral exploration properties in Nigeria, Senegal and Burkina Faso.

Indonesian coal company PT Harum Energy is looking to buy more nickel mines as it ceases further investment in fossil fuels in order to prepare for the energy transition. The miner plans to avoid further spending in its coal operations beyond the level required to sustain current output, president director Ray Antonio Gunara said in an interview on Friday.
Astral Foods broiler house Astral to post 465% rise in earnings as operations normalise

Integrated poultry producer Astral Foods has advised that its earnings per share (EPS) for the six months ended March 31 will increase by between 465% and 475% year-on-year. This will result in interim EPS of between 913c and 930c apiece, compared with EPS of 162c in the first half of the prior financial year.

Senior gold producer Endeavour Mining announces that first gold pour at the Sabodala-Massawa BIOX Expansion project, in Senegal, took place on April 18, marking the successful delivery of the BIOX Expansion project on schedule and on budget, with no lost-time injuries. Endeavour points out that the first gold pour at the Sabodala-Massawa BIOX Expansion was achieved only 24 months after construction started, transforming the Sabodala-Massawa Complex into a tier-one mine.

Ahead of the upcoming May 29 elections, State-owned power utility Eskom has cautioned all political parties against the “dangerous practice” of placing election posters on electrical structures. The utility said in the past there had been incidents of electrocution whilst posters were being put up, which it said contravened the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Eskom warned of an inadvertent flash-over or electrical contact and said this could cause serious injuries and even be fatal. “As such, Eskom would like to caution all political parties against the dangerous practice of placing campaign posters on electrical structures. This includes electricity poles, electricity towers, meter boxes and mini substations,” the utility stated. Only authorised personnel are allowed to climb or work on the electrical structures, it pointed out.

South Africa’s much-delayed draft Gas Master Plan (GMP2024) has been released for public comment by Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe, amid indications that the gap between demand and supply will grow steeply from 2026 onwards when Sasol ceases to supply Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal industrial customers with gas imported from Mozambique. The document includes four scenarios, including a base case that shows that gas demand will far exceed supply in the short term and that the gap, which has been described as an anticipated ‘gas cliff’, will worsen as demand grows.

In a move aimed at diversification, Canadian mining firm Silvercorp has announced a C$200-million deal to venture into Ecuador, just weeks after missing out on acquiring control of Tanzania-focused OreCorp. The all-share offer for TSX-V-listed Adventus Mining, valued at C$0.50 a share, will establish Silvercorp, traditionally focused on China, as a fresh entrant in South America.
