All four Eskom coal-fired power stations that are currently maintaining electricity availability factors (EAF) of more than 75% are headed by women. This was highlighted by Eskom group executive: human resources Elsie Pule on Thursday. She was participating in a panel discussion at the Women in Energy breakfast at the Enlit Africa 2024 conference, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Every time a woman took over a power station, she affirmed, the EAF shot up. Eskom, a decade ago, created a Women Advancement Programme. Over ten years, this has resulted in the proportion of women senior executives in the State-owned national electricity utility increasing from 29% to 42%. The same progamme has reduced the gender salary differential to 6%.
Hudbay upsizes bought-deal offering

Base metals company Hudbay Minerals has increased the size of its previously announced equity offering from $300-million to $350-million. Underwriters will now buy 36.84-million shares at $9.50 each in the bought-deal offering.
Faraday Copper raises C$20m

Canadian company Faraday Copper on Wednesday announced a C$20-million bought-deal financing to advance the exploration and development of its Copper Creek project, in Arizona, US. Faraday entered into an agreement with Ventrum Financial Corp as co-lead underwriter and joint bookrunners for the purchase of 25-million shares at C$0.80 a share.
Cullinan diamond mine Petra signs PPAs to procure wheeled renewable energy for Cullinan, Finsch

Diamond producer Petra Diamonds has entered into long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the procurement of wheeled renewable energy for its Cullinan and Finsch diamond mines from licenced South African energy trader Etana Energy. Etana provides cost-competitive clean energy from new large-scale renewable energy projects, mostly wind-based, through wheeling over the existing South African grid. The company has a portfolio of multiple ready-to-build and grid-secured wind and solar projects that are expected to come online over the course of 2025 and 2026.
Reunert H1 earnings rise on Electrical Engineering, Applied Electronics segments

JSE-listed Reunert reported a rise in earnings during the six months ended March 31, 2024, driven by good performance in its Electrical Engineering and the Applied Electronics’ defence cluster segments. Its Information and Communications Technology (ICT) segment, however, posted a muted performance.

Diamond exploration company Botswana Diamonds has been granted four prospecting licences – covering just under 2 332 km2 – in the Kalahari of Botswana. The prospecting licences are in the same general area as Gem Diamonds' Ghaghoo mine, as well as Botswana Diamonds' own KX36 project.
Rough diamonds sold by De Beers De Beers reports lower fourth-cycle rough diamond sales

Diamond miner De Beers sold $380-million worth of rough diamonds during its fourth sales cycle of this year, compared with the $446-million of diamonds sold during the third sales cycle of this year. Sales were also lower than the $479-million of diamonds sold during the fourth sales cycle of 2023.

Australian diversified miner South32 is open to buying Anglo American's share of two manganese operations the companies jointly own, should they come for sale at the right price, CEO Graham Kerr said on Thursday. Anglo is the subject of a takeover offer by the world's biggest listed miner BHP Group, which had previously owned those assets but spun them out with its 2015 demerger of South32.

Miners Rio Tinto and Bougainville Copper (BCL) on Thursday confirmed that class action had been initiated against the companies in Papua New Guinea’s national court. The action, brought forth on behalf of Bougainville residents, aims to seek compensation for alleged environmental degradation and social harm attributed to the Panguna mine, which ceased operations in 1989 due to militant activities.

North American lithium producer Sayona Mining has initiated reverse circulation (RC) drilling at its Tabba Tabba project, in Western Australia, where previous air core drilling identified potential pegmatite systems. A recently completed gravity survey has helped focus deeper RC drilling over two areas along a 7.5 km prospective corridor. The northern area is located immediately south of the historic Tabba Tabba tantalum mine, where recent exploration by Wildcat Resources has identified encouraging lithium mineralisation.
