COP29 climate summit host Azerbaijan defends oil and gas investments

Azerbaijan, host of this year's UN climate summit, will defend the right of oil and gas producing nations to invest in the sector, the country's president said on Friday, noting that despite climate targets, fossil fuel demand remains strong. As the host of the United Nations COP29 climate summit in November, Azerbaijan will oversee negotiations among nearly 200 countries on how to raise more finance to combat climate change and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions heating the planet.
Kibo subsidiary progressing Pyebridge asset

Kibo Energy’s subsidiary, Mast Energy Developments (MED), has received official confirmation that its Pyebridge 9 MW flexible power generation asset in England has passed its satisfactory performance days (SPD) requirements under its current existing T-1 capacity market (CM) contract. This means that Pyebridge will retain the current CM contract’s associated yearly gross profit margin income of about £308 000 which is paid and received monthly in arrears.
Nhlanhla Nene Nene steps down as MC Mining chair

South Africa-focused coal company MC Mining on Friday announced the resignation of Nhlanhla Nene as director and chairperson of the board. Nene joined the company on April 11, 2022, initially serving as a nonexeuctive director and then as chairperson from April 28, 2022.

An investment of more than $1.2-million through a partnership between Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) and plastic packaging company Plastic Packaging has culminated in the opening of a new polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flaking plant in Okahandja, Namibia. The plant is expected to double the capacity of the only mechanical recycler of plastic waste in the country.

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) has voiced serious concerns following an incident at Glencore’s copper smelter in Mount Isa, which left two workers in critical condition. “Tough questions need to be asked about how an incident like this has occurred,” stated AWU Queensland Secretary Stacey Schinnerl, expressing deep concern over the incident.

Diversified miner Anglo American has firmly rebuffed a $38.8-billion proposal from mining heavyweight BHP, with chairperson Stuart Chambers dismissing the nonbinding offer as “highly unattractive”. In a statement released on Friday, Chambers labelled the BHP proposal as opportunistic and lacking in appreciation for Anglo’s prospects.

As uranium developer Bannerman Resources progresses with its plans for an initial eight-million-tonne-a-year Etango project, in Namibia, it is casting its gaze towards a broader horizon. The company has started to delve into potential expansion options, aiming for a larger-scale operation in the future. The ASX-listed junior recently completed a scoping study that looks at the long-term optionality afforded by the large-scale Etango resource. Executive chairperson Brandon Munro highlighted the study’s findings, emphasising a “clear pathway” towards achieving a production capacity of 6.7-million-pound-a-year.

EDF Renewables is currently leading the construction of almost 1.2 GW of low-carbon power generation capacity in South Africa, comprised of 763 MW of wind power, 355 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 75 MW of battery storage. This new build programme comprises eight sites across the Northern and Eastern Cape, developed by EDF Renewables and its partners.
