UN Global Campaign for Road Safety launched in South Africa

In support of national and local authorities’ road safety initiatives, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt, in partnership with outdoor advertising company JCDecaux, on May 15, launched the UN Global Campaign for Road Safety under the hashtag #MakeASafetyStatement. The launch of the campaign in South Africa is part of UN efforts to raise public awareness of life-saving initiatives on the road.

Wildfire has moved closer to Canadian oil city, says local authority

A large wildfire threatening the major Canadian oil sands city of Fort McMurray moved closer overnight and weather conditions were unfavorable, the local authority said on Wednesday. The fire was just 5.5 km away from the city's landfill, compared with 7.5 km late on Tuesday, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which includes Fort McMurray, said in a statement.

Sun Silver gleams on ASX debut with Nevada project

The company’s stock more than doubled on its first day trading on the bourse, closing at A$0.43 a share. “The very high level of investor demand saw us close the IPO three weeks ahead of schedule,” commented Sun Silver executive director Gerard O’Donovan.

Seifsa, unions commit to addressing access to housing for sector employees

The Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) negotiations have concluded with a 7% wage increase over the next year for entry-level workers in the metals and engineering industry and a 6% wage increase over the next year for skilled workers. Entry-level workers will receive a 6% wage increase during the subsequent two years until June 30, 2027, and skilled workers will receive a 5% increase over the same two-year period. The increases are based on the minimum rates of pay, and not on the actual rates of pay.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe on May 15 held a stakeholder engagement session that deliberated on the plans to reopen the Lily and Barbrook gold mines in Mpumalanga. Half of mining industry still resisting AI integration

At least half of heavy machinery users within the global mining industry still rely primarily on manual supply chain management tools, with 40% still using manual tools for operational planning, Wits Mining Institute's Professor Glen Nwaila has said. “So even if the automation is partially achieved, you will find that the plant is heavily automated but, in the mine, only a portion of it is actually automated,” he said, speaking at the Mind Shift conference hosted by Mine Equipment Manufacturers of South Africa, in Sandton, on May 15.

Nonprofit monitoring organisation Corruption Watch (CW) has confirmed in its latest report that there are significant concerns about the impact of corruption in the country, particularly a marked lack of confidence in the efficacy and ability of law enforcement agencies to tackle corruption. The report, titled ‘The impact of corruption: insights from a perceptions and experiences survey’ has been informed by interviews with more than 1 500 respondents over a two-month period across all provinces.
