BHP is likely to sweeten its $43-billion takeover offer for Anglo American for a second time and possibly add cash, investors in both companies said on Tuesday, after the London-headquartered target rejected a higher bid. Anglo said the improved all-share offer, up 10% from BHP's initial proposal, continued to significantly undervalue the company.

Australia-listed Buxton Resources on Tuesday announced an agreement to acquire a manganese brownfields exploration project in Arizona, US. The Matrix manganese project, in Mohave county, is adjacent to the Artillery Peak project, which has a resource of 277-million tonnes at 2.8% manganese.

Volcan Cia Minera plans to make a series of debt payments through August and to refinance later obligations without imposing losses, said the head of its new controlling shareholder, dismissing speculation over a default or restructuring at the Peruvian zinc miner. “Absolutely, categorically no haircut is necessary,” said Jose Luis Manzano, the head of Integra Capital. “It’s just changing the maturities and that’s it. The future cash flow doesn’t justify a haircut.”

Green electrons and green molecules are presenting South Africa with a massive opportunity to reindustrialise, Nedbank CIB head of infrastructure, energy and telecommunications Mike Peo told the Green Hydrogen Roundtable on Monday. “We have an opportunity for South Africa to completely reindustrialise, to start building up our industrial base that we have lost over the last ten to 15 years,” was Peo's inviting message at the event addressed by the Chemical Industries Education & Training Authority (CHIETA) CEO Yershen Pillay, as well as by Higher Education and Training Department deputy director-general Zukile Mvalo. The Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) – in support of Power Africa, a US government-led partnership – and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) South Africa, launched Phase 2 of the Just Energy Transition (JET) Technical Training for Women in Electrical and Renewable Energy Programme, in Limpopo, on May 10. Women electricians and artisans in Limpopo will receive specialised technical training at seven technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges in the province.

The solar storm which hit Earth on Friday and Saturday was the most severe to affect South and Southern Africa in 21 years, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has reported. The SANSA Space Weather Centre, located at the SANSA Space Science facility in Hermanus, in the Western Cape, issued a G5 geomagnetic storm warning, as well as several G4 warnings, over the period of the event.
