Water and wastewater treatment solutions provider WEC Projects announced in June that it would soon complete the installation of a new WEC Model B packaged sewage treatment plant at the Mothae Diamond Mine, located in the Maluti mountains 214 km from Maseru, in Lesotho. The mine is 70% owned by Lucapa Diamonds and 30% by the Lesotho government.

In a release published in May by law firm Webber Wentzel partner Kirsty Kilner and senior associate Tendai Bonga it is said that the pressure on South African mining companies to raise their standards of environmental, social and corporate governance behaviour is expected to gain momentum this year. This has been ascribed to the long-awaited parliamentary approval of the National Environmental Management Amendment Bill (NEMLAA4).

Gold value falls 3.5% in July

The World Gold Council (WGC) reports that the value of gold fell by 3.5% in July as a result of a strong dollar and flat demand in the first half of the month, leaving it down 2.9% for the year to date, at $1 753/oz. However, softer inflation expectations mid-month and jobless claims a few days later in the US nudged the dollar and real rates down – these reversals also coincided with extended positioning in futures markets for currencies, gold and to a lesser extent, rates.
Springfield Retail Centre Springfield Retail Centre relaunched after arson damage

JSE-listed Emira Property Fund has relaunched its Springfield Retail Centre, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, after the centre was damaged by arson in the widespread looting and vandalism that took place in the province in July last year. Starting July 12 last year, looters made their way into the centre and ransacked most of the stores, culminating in an arson attack the next day.
Solidarity sends list of 300 power experts to Gordhan, Eskom

Trade union Solidarity sent a list of skilled power experts to Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and Eskom CEO André de Ruyter on August 4, following calls by Gordhan to identify energy experts to help the country address prevailing electricity generation deficiencies. 
According to Solidarity, the 300 experts on its shortlist have about 5 500 years of combined experience in the industry, as well as more than 400 accredited combined qualifications of which 14 are doctorate degrees in engineering and related fields.

Ironveld general meeting to go ahead despite a request for withdrawal

London-listed iron-ore company Ironveld’s general meeting (GM), set for Friday August 12, will go ahead despite the company having received written communication from investment research firm Align Research director Richard Jennings requesting that the GM be stayed. With the GM having already been convened by the Ironveld board of directors, and in line with common law practice, as well as the company's articles of association, the GM cannot be withdrawn or cancelled, Ironveld said on August 4.

The South African agriculture sector continues to deliver growth and value to the economy, with a growth rate of 13.1% recorded in 2020, 8.3% in 2021 and a 3.6% year-on-year growth rate so far this year. Growth will, however, taper off soon if the sector does not find new ways of managing complexities that impact growth, such as gender diversity, says financial services provider Nedbank.
Galileo starts drilling on Luansobe copper project

London-listed Galileo Resources has started a 3 000 m core drilling programme on the Luansobe copper project, in Zambia. The programme has been designed to infill gaps in historic drilling and twin selected holes, with a particular focus on shallow up-dip projections of the deposit.
Largo Clean Energy mulls JV with Ansaldo

Canada-headquartered vanadium supplier Largo subsidiary Largo Clean Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with renewable energy company Ansaldo Green Tech (AGT) to assess opportunities for working together on manufacturing and deploying vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). The companies may form a joint venture (JV) to commercially deploy Largo’s “VCHARGE” VRFBs in the European, African and Middle Eastern power generation markets.
