Indian metals-to-oil conglomerate Vedanta's aluminium business will no longer add coal-fired capacity, its CEO said, in the company's biggest move yet toward renewable energy. Vedanta Aluminium, the country's biggest producer of the metal, aims to increase the share of renewable energy it is using to 30% by 2030 from nearly 5% now, John Slaven told Reuters in an interview.

International lawyers representing the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo said on Wednesday new evidence gathered from whistleblowers indicates that Apple is sourcing minerals from conflict areas in the east of the country. In a statement, the lawyers urged Apple to answer questions about its supply chain in the country, and said they were evaluating legal options. Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.
West Red Lake hits high grades at new Madsen zone

TSX-V-listed West Red Lake Gold Mines has intersected high-grade mineralisation at its Madsen mine, in Ontario, with results as high as 37.33 g/t gold over 2.79 m and 5.26 g/t over 9 m at the North Austin zone. The latest round of drill results from Madsen were all drilled from underground on the North Austin zone, which represents a new area of high-grade mineralisation extending the current Madsen resource to the north-east.

Original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA) has launched a line of electric heavy-duty trucks, called eActros, as part of its Power Up electric mobility offering. The fully battery-electric truck range includes the Mercedes-Benz eActros 300, comprising 4 x 2 and 6 x 2 wheelbase configurations, the Mercedes-Benz eActros 400 in a 6 x 2 wheelbase configuration, as well as a truck tractor variant.

Cape Town is really taking the lead in the green energy transition, affirmed the city’s Economic Growth MMC, Alderman James Vos, on Tuesday. He was opening Western Cape trade, tourism and investment promotion agency Wesgro’s Green Hub pavilion at the Enlit Africa 2024 exhibition, in the Cape Town International Convention Centre. He highlighted that the city had a R4-billion budget, over the next three years, to upgrade and maintain its electricity grid, to enable the green energy transition. One of the priorities of this programme was to ensure grid stability, for, without grid stability, green electricity was going to go nowhere.

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs refiled long-awaited changes to its work-permit regime to allow for the creation of a so-called nomad visa for remote workers. The May 20 gazetting of the changes, which had last month been withdrawn after the department failed to observe a mandatory period for public comment, means that the changes are now law.
