Despite the Department of Transport’s (DoT’s) long-standing vision to achieve seamless integration of all modal public transport operations to ensure that it is more efficient, affordable, safe and reliable, Unitrans senior business development manager Bazil Govender says progress is not being made quickly enough. “We've had these discussions with various iterations of government, different administrations, different public ministers, but we are not making the kind of progress, and at the pace needed, towards achieving that goal,” he said during a Unitrans-hosted Transport Forum webinar on June 6, where challenges and opportunities facing the passenger road-based transportation sector of South Africa were discussed by various experts.
Guinea signs alumina refinery deal with Emirates Global Aluminium subsidiary

Guinea has signed a non-binding agreement with a subsidiary of Emirates Global Aluminium for the construction of a major alumina refinery, the second one in the country, two senior officials of Guinea's mines ministry told Reuters. The agreement, known as a "Term Sheet", said the company, through its Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC), will build the two-million metric ton capacity refinery by September 2026 in the west of the country. Initial production is expected at 1.2-million tonnes annually.

Ghana's gold production rose 8.3% to four-million ounces in 2023, data from the Ghana Chamber of Mines showed on Friday. The growth was driven primarily by expansion in the output of small-scale miners, which was sufficient to offset a decline in large-scale miners' production.

Some of the world's major economies want to finalise a plan ahead of this year's UN climate summit to halt new private sector funding for coal projects, five sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. If approved, the draft proposal by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, would be the first move by a multilateral institution to curb financing for coal, one of the biggest causes of climate change, which produces more carbon dioxide emissions than oil or gas when it is burned for energy.

Suppple says the health bot will provide digital healthcare assistance to the 54 member States of the African Union (AU), in what it says “is a move to support the establishment of a new public health order for the African continent today”.
China's May coal imports rise 11% on lower domestic output

China's imports of coal rose 11% in May from a year earlier, customs data and Reuters records showed on Friday, as lower domestic output this year led to increased shipments of international coal. Coal imports by the world's biggest consumer of the fuel were 43.82-million metric tons in May, the customs data showed. That compared with 39.58-million tons in May 2023, according to Reuters records.

Indonesia to grant coal mine asset to Islamic group Nahdlatul Ulama

Indonesia is set to award a coal mining concession to the country's largest Islamic group, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), next week to provide it with a source of income, a Cabinet minister said on Friday. The government issued a regulation last week allowing religious organisations to manage mining assets, which critics have said were a sign of pork barrelling and a reward to religious groups for their long political support.
