Cement producer Sephaku Cement notes that, over the last 20 years the cement industry has evolved and fragmented, which has, in part, resulted in challenges related to ineffective enforcement of regulation and quality standards, and excess capacity, in addition to the relatively new challenges of the carbon tax. The company explains that the cement industry has evolved from four integrated producers, which produced about 16 different cement types and/or brands, to six integrated producers, 11 cement blenders and five or six importers.

Corrosion control specialist Cortec’s migrating corrosion inhibitors (MCIs) technology offers a cost-effective solution to extend structural service life in high-temperature areas, such as those in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, says Cortec public relations manager Ana Juraga. The high temperatures and harsh conditions in such countries accelerate corrosion, threatening the durability of reinforced concrete, with corrosion activity doubling with every 10 °C rise in temperature.

Firm to operate power plant for Nigerian cement facility

Innovative technology provider Wärtsilä has signed a ten-year operations and maintenance (O&M) agreement for a captive power plant to provide energy for a Nigerian cement production facility. The new cement plant is owned by components manufacturer and metal fabrication company Mangal Industries and will be located in Kogi state, Nigeria. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in the second quarter of 2024.

President Cyril Ramaphosa ANC will seek to form government of national unity

South Africa's African National Congress will invite other political parties to form a national unity government, its leader President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday, after it lost its majority for the first time in the democratic era. The former liberation movement once led by Nelson Mandela has run South Africa since it swept to power in a 1994 election that marked the end of white minority rule. But it was punished for its chequered record in last week's vote.
