Underserved, low income and rural areas are the next frontier for fibre network operators; however to ensure high quality fibre connectivity is viable for these regions, quality components and clever design will be key. “The market has been quiet for the past six months, with slow growth in major metropolitans, where FTTX has been adopted by most of the middle and high-income market. We expect growth to pick up as operators roll out to smaller towns, rural areas and lower income communities,” said specialist end-to-end fibre solutions provider Dartcom fibre connectivity and management solutions product manager and fibre expert George Martin.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has postponed the emergency rehabilitation on parts of the Lower Sundays River Canal, in the Eastern Cape, in the aftermath of flooding events. The department had planned to close sections of the canal, which forms part of the Lower Sunday’s Government Water Scheme, for a three-month period from June 10 until August 15 for the urgent rehabilitation work.

Colombia’s trade ministry is calling for a restriction on coal sales to Israel in the latest bid to isolate the Jewish state as the death toll rises in its Gaza campaign. The ministry made the recommendation to “limit” shipments of the fuel to a committee that rules on tariffs and foreign trade, according to an internal document seen by Bloomberg and a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

Newmont CEO Tom Palmer said on Thursday the gold miner's plans to divest eight non-core assets and trim its workforce to cut debt following its $17.14-billion purchase of Newcrest were progressing well. "(We are) quite excited about the level of interest in each of those assets," Palmer told reporters in Melbourne.

Sprott has launched a $100-million fund that will buy and hold physical copper, marking a comeback for a class of investment product that has in the past been highly controversial among investors and regulators. The new Sprott Physical Copper Trust started trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday. Sprott, which already has successful funds backed by physical gold, silver, platinum, palladium and uranium, said in a prospectus that it would be “the world’s first physical copper fund.”
