Federation of German Industries executive board member Wolfgang Niedermark European countries urged to continue investing in mining
Published: 06 Jun 24
Europe is at risk of losing important sources of raw materials, because it is phasing out mining rather than investing in more mines, Federation of German Industries executive board member Wolfgang Niedermark told delegates at the MiningForum, in Berlin, Germany, on June 6. He stated that there was growing demand globally for raw materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, as well as structural supply deficits for most of the critical metals needed by the world for the green energy transition.
Lift-off of the Boeing Starliner capsule on its first crewed test flight, on top of an ULA Atlas V rocket Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft finally launches on its first crewed test flight
Published: 06 Jun 24
Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner space capsule successfully lifted off on its first crewed test flight at 16h52 South African time on Wednesday, and is now safely in orbit, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) has confirmed. It is scheduled to dock with the International Space Station (ISS) at 18h15, South African time, on Thursday. It will remain docked with the ISS until at least June 14. The Starliner has been developed under Nasa’s Commercial Crew Programme (CCP), and the test flight is being executed by two Nasa astronauts. They are Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams. Both are veteran astronauts, both having flown two previous space missions. Both are pilots, and both are also engineers. Wilmore had previously accumulated 178 days in space, while Williams’ total was 322 days. On this test flight, Wilmore is the mission commander and Williams is the pilot.

Solar panels in front of a Komati cooling tower Eskom ‘decouples’ renewables roll-out from coal station closure plan
Published: 06 Jun 24
Eskom CEO Dan Marokane reports that a decision has been made to “decouple” the closure of its coal stations from the building, in partnership, of new renewable energy generation capacity linked to its goal of being a net-zero emitter by 2050 and the just energy transition strategy. In an address to members of the South African National Energy Association, Marokane also revealed that a board decision had been made for Eskom to participate directly in renewables projects on land adjacent to its existing power stations rather than releasing those grid-ready sites to private generators.

Eskom CEO Dan Marokane Marokane says R285m spent on diesel in May compared with R2.8bn in May 2023
Published: 06 Jun 24
Eskom CEO Dan Marokane has rebuffed persistent suggestions that the utility is keeping loadshedding at bay owing to an “excessive” reliance on the diesel-fuelled open cycle gas turbines, reporting that it spent R285-million on diesel during May compared with R2.8-billion in the same month last year and against a budget for the month of R1.7-billion. Addressing the South African National Energy Association AGM against a backdrop of deep suspicion about how Eskom has managed to avoid resorting to rotational power cuts for 71 days, including over a highly competitive election period, Marokane attributed the stabilisation to the Generation Recovery Plan, which had been under way since March 2023.
