North-West University Business School economist Professor Raymond Parsons Persistently poor GDP growth most significant feature of South Africa’s economic performance
Published: 04 Jun 24
South Africa’s continued disappointing economic growth remains the most significant feature of the country’s macroeconomic performance, North-West University Business School economist Professor Raymond Parsons has said following the release of the first-quarter GDP figures by Statistics South Africa on June 4. “The negative GDP figure of -0.1% quarter-on-quarter again reflects how difficult it has been for the economy to gain momentum in the recent past. Although GDP growth may yet reach about a modest 0.9% in 2024 as a whole, total GDP in the first quarter is in fact lower than the peak reached in the third quarter of 2022,” he noted.

Copper falls through $10 000 as exchange inventories keep rising Copper falls through $10 000 as exchange inventories keep rising
Published: 04 Jun 24
Copper fell below $10 000/t as a sharp rise in global inventories prompts traders to zero in on weak conditions in the spot market. Stockpiles on the Shanghai Futures Exchange have climbed to the highest since 2020, and there have also been a steady stream of smaller inflows into Asian depots tracked by the London Metal Exchange over the past few weeks. Inventories typically decline at this time of year, and the jump has put pressure on prices after copper spiked to a record high above $11 100 last month.
