Gold miner Kingsgate Consolidated has announced its first gold pour at the newly refurbished Plant #1 at the Chatree mine, in Thailand. The company reported on Friday that the first four doré bars were successfully poured, with both the elution circuit and the refurbished gold room operating smoothly.

Sprott has launched a $100-million fund that will buy and hold physical copper, marking a comeback for a class of investment product that has in the past been highly controversial among investors and regulators. The new Sprott Physical Copper Trust started trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday. Sprott, which already has successful funds backed by physical gold, silver, platinum, palladium and uranium, said in a prospectus that it would be “the world’s first physical copper fund.”
Brazil seeks $20.7bn from Vale, BHP over 2015 dam collapse

Brazil's government presented on Thursday a counteroffer requesting that miners Vale and BHP and their joint venture Samarco pay 109-billion reais ($20.74-billion) as reparations for a tailings dam collapse in 2015. The proposal is higher than a previous offer from the miners to pay the federal and local governments 72-billion reais to settle reparations for the disaster in the town of Mariana, Minas Gerais state.

Canada's biggest oil sands producers support a paying a tax on carbon but see a proposed federal oil and gas emissions cap as unnecessary legislation, the companies' CEOs told lawmakers in Ottawa on Thursday. Executives from Suncor Energy, Imperial Oil, Cenovus Energy, Enbridge and Shell appeared via videolink before a House of Commons committee to answer questions on their efforts to cut emissions.

Additives protect gears in industrial transmissions

Industrial equipment supplier BMG has introduced the Cera Tec high performance additives to its range of industrial lubricants. The additives offer significant resistance to high temperature and pressure, effectively protecting gears in various sectors, including sugar mills, mining, chemical plants, manufacturing, and general engineering. Developed by oils, lubricants and additives specialist Liqui Moly, Cera Tec is a micro-ceramic solid lubricant suspension based on hexagonal boron nitride (BN) in selected base oils. The lubricant reduces friction and protects the engine and transmission from wear, extending service life of assemblies, says BMG power transmission, agricultural, automotive and lubrication divisions business development manager Carlo Beukes.

Eskom Transmission CEO Segomoco Scheppers says he believes the “pieces are falling into place” that will allow the power utility to “ramp up and move faster” in expanding the country’s constrained power grid. Grid expansion will enable Eskom and independent power producers to bring much-needed new generation capacity online.
