With skills having been identified as a key cross-cutting requirement for the Just Energy Transition Implementation Plan (JET-IP), the National Business Initiative (NBI), together with the Presidency’s JET project management unit (JET PMU) and Boston Consulting Group, have launched the JET Skilling for Employment Programme (JET SEP). South Africa has an opportunity to unlock 20% more of its current gross domestic product through green initiatives, which will need between 150 000 and 200 000 direct jobs by 2025, and between 350 000 and 400 000 jobs by 2050, related to solar photovoltaic, wind and battery storage technology installations, NBI CEO and JET SEP steering committee member Shameela Soobramoney pointed out during an April 29 briefing.

Run-of-mine (RoM) coal production at MC Mining's Uitkomst steelmaking and thermal coal mine, in South Africa, increased by 14% year-on-year to 115 909 t for the quarter ended March 31 – the third quarter of its 2024 financial year. ASX-, Aim- and JSE-listed MC Mining, which is being bought out by Goldway Capital Investment, reports that the mine sold 75 590 t of high-grade coal during the quarter.
Mauritius Telecom in talks for subsea cable to link Africa, Asia

Mauritius’ top telecommunications company is in talks with operators including Reliance Jio Infocomm and Orange for a new undersea cable linking Africa, Indian Ocean islands and Asia, improving redundancy in region hit by breakdowns. The new line named T4 will replace the South Africa Far East (SAFE) cable that’s coming to end of life in 2027, a quarter of a century after commissioning. T4 will have 1 000 times more capacity than the SAFE, according to Kapil Reesaul, chief executive officer of the Port Louis-based Mauritius Telecom.

The White House on Tuesday reformed the US environmental review process for major projects which officials said would speed up approval of everything from transmission of power from wind and solar farms to semiconductor manufacturing. The reforms are the second and final phase of the administration of President Joe Biden's adjustments to the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA, after former President Donald Trump overhauled the bedrock environmental law in 2021 for the first time in decades.

GE Vernova invested $10.2-million in Xlinks First, the UK company planning a massive renewable power project in Morocco and a 4 000 km undersea cable to deliver the energy to Britain. The investment helped close the latest funding round for Xlinks First, capping $110-million raised to date, according to CEO James Humfrey. It’s an incremental step for the company as it advances a project it estimates will cost as much as £24-billion ($30.1-billion) to construct.
White House eyes Russian uranium import ban while house bill stalls

The Biden administration is considering banning imports of enriched Russian uranium using executive authority as congressional efforts to block the Kremlin’s shipments of the reactor fuel stall, people familiar with the matter said. Officials from the White House National Security Council, the Department of Energy and other corners of the administration have been in talks on limiting Russian uranium imports, including a ban that includes waivers similar to legislation the easily passed the House last year, the people said.
Antilles disappointed with Dominican arbitration award

ASX-listed Antilles Gold chairperson Brian Johnson on Tuesday expressed the company’s disappointment with the tribunal of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Dispute’s (ICSID’s) arbitration award related to the Las Lagunas gold tailings project in the Dominican Republic. Having rejected EnviroGold Lagunas’ (EVGLL’s) principal claim of $15.5-million, the ICSID awarded the Antilles subsidiary $4.07-million, including interest to April 24.

Copper miner Metals Acquisition Limited (MAC) expects a rebound at the CSA mine in the second quarter following a softer performance in the initial quarter of the year. BHP Group can't cherry pick Anglo American assets without paying a hefty premium, Anglo investors told Reuters, concerned that they stand to lose heavily by holding shares in South African subsidiaries. The world's No. 1 miner is weighing up its next move after its initial $39-billion takeover proposal for smaller rival Anglo was rejected last week. The proposed premium was 31% on Anglo's implied value.
