On day 55 of no loadshedding in South Africa, newly appointed Eskom boss Dan Marokane warns that the country is “not of out the woods yet, but we have visible progress towards where we want to be, and we should acknowledge that”. Speaking at Enlit Africa 2024 held in Cape Town on Tuesday – on day 82 in the hot seat – Marokane said a debate anchored around suspicions on whether the improvement in electricity availability might be linked to the next week’s general elections was of little help.
Eskom group executive for distribution Monde Bala Eskom seeks Nersa permission to reserve grid capacity for public IPP procurement rounds

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has invited comment on Eskom’s application to preserve and reserve grid connection capacity for independent power producers (IPPs) participating in public procurement processes implemented in line with Section 34 of the Electricity Regulation Act (ERA). In its application, Eskom indicates that it is seeking permission to discriminate in favour of public procurement IPP projects, at the expense of private IPP projects.
Tharisa warns of lower full-year earnings on the back of lower PGM prices

Platinum group metals (PGM) and chrome concentrate producer Tharisa has warned that its earnings per share (EPS) and headline earnings per share (HEPS) are likely to be up to 29% lower year-on-year for the financial year ended March 31, as a result of a 40% decrease in PGM price and increased cost pressures. EPS are expected to be between 22.4% to 28.2% lower year-on-year at between $0.125 and $0.135, while HEPS are expected to be between 23.3% and 29% lower year-on-year at between $0.125 and $0.135.
Consol Energy resumes shipments from marine terminal in Baltimore

Coal producer Consol Energy said on Tuesday shipments to international markets have resumed from its marine terminal in Baltimore. Coal exports from the busy US port of Baltimore were disrupted in March following the collapse of a bridge that was struck by a massive cargo ship. Consol's terminal was also shut following the incident.

State-owned Transnet Port Terminal (TPT) reports that the Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) had exceeded its reefer targets by 62% for February and March. The terminal is also 22% ahead of target for the February to April period, despite having lost 13 days of operation to wind and fog in April, which contributed to a 53% decline for volumes in the month of April.

The share price of Gibb River Diamonds surged 48% on Tuesday on news that the company has been granted key licences that are at the heart of developing the Ellendale project, in Western Australia. Gibb was granted three mining leases that cover the main portions of the historic workings at the E4 and E9 pipes, together with the extensively bulk-sampled E12 alluvials and their access.
