Zambia seeks power imports for key mining sector

Zambia's State-owned electricity utility Zesco said on Monday it is seeking to import power to avert an energy deficit that could affect output in Africa's second-largest copper producer. The southern African country generates 86% of its electricity from hydropower stations. Power generation has been hit by a severe drought induced by El Nino - a weather phenomenon resulting from the abnormal warming of the waters in the eastern Pacific, which raises temperatures globally.

UK innovation agency highlights quality of the emerging African space sector

Innovate UK, Britain’s national innovation agency, has, in a new report, highlighted that Africa is becoming a hub for globally competitive space technology, development and research. In particular, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa were identified as space sector leaders in Africa. The report was drawn up after a tour of UK space facilities and companies by space sector experts from South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, and pan-African organisations, in December last year. This tour was organised by Innovate UK, under its Global Alliance Africa project, with the support of the Research and Innovation Systems for Africa Fund and the Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability.

The Foundation L’Oréal announced on Monday that the sixth edition of the Women in Science Young Talent Search had been launched in South Africa. Novare partners with IFC to advance green building, retail decarbonisation

Real estate investment firm Novare Equity Partners has partnered with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on its Greening Real Estate Investment Portfolios (Grips) programme, which affords Novare access to a comprehensive suite of advisory and investment services.
The strategic alliance will assist Novare to define, execute and finance its journey towards sustainability across its shopping malls in Nigeria, Zambia and Mozambique.

CSIR researchers confirm latest El Niño is among harshest in history

A research team tasked to monitor the impact of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climatic phenomenon has confirmed that the 2023/24 El Niño was among the top five strongest on record.
El Niño is associated with warmer and drier weather conditions in South Africa.

Icasa officially appoints new chairperson

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has appointed Councillor Mothibi Ramusi as chairperson, effective May 2, for a five-year term. Nelson Mandela University-led consortium to develop green hydrogen feasibility study

A consortium led by Nelson Mandela University and boutique consultancy firm Ikigai Group has won a UK Government grant under the South Africa-UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (Pact) programme to deliver an innovative feasibility study to explore the viability of green hydrogen production and export infrastructure from the Eastern Cape to global markets, including the UK, Europe and Japan. The consortium will be working with the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) in support of South Africa’s wider development and just energy transition plans.

M&R’s TNT awarded EPC contract in South America

JSE-listed Murray & Roberts (M&R) has announced that Terra Nova Technologies (TNT), in joint venture with Ingeniería y Construcción Sigdo Koppers, has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with a large copper producer for a mine in South America. The contract value is about $200-million, with TNT’s share in the joint venture being 51%.
