The current loadshedding reprieve is not a result of excessive diesel burning to pacify voters but rather a consequence of government and business coming together to made headway in solving South Africa’s electricity crisis, Energy Council of South Africa (ECSA) CEO James Mackay has said. Sceptical South Africans have been speculating that the weeks-long halt in loadshedding was a ploy by the ruling party to obtain more votes ahead of the May 20 national elections.
A Multi-Application Fuel Efficient Cookstove New clean cooking equipment factory opened in Paarl

Clean and renewable energy solutions company Ener-G-Africa (EGA) on Thursday officially opened its new biomass stove and cookware manufacturing facility, in the Western Cape province town of Paarl. The factory will produce two different types of stoves, and two different ranges of cooking pots. “Our factory is a stainless steel factory, using only South African manufactured stainless steel, which is world-class,” highlights EGA business development manager Dave Lello. “We have equipped it with the latest technology machines, including a fibre laser cutter, a range of presses, bending machines, and polishing machines, among others.”

George building collapse Hope fades for 44 trapped in collapsed South Africa building

Relatives of 44 construction workers trapped under a collapsed building in the South African city of George faced a fourth day of anguished waiting on Thursday as heavy machinery worked at the site in a race against time to find any survivors. Of 81 people who were on site when the five-storey private residential building collapsed on Monday, eight have been confirmed dead and 29 alive, 16 of them in a critical condition, according to the latest figures from George municipality. "A number of families... (are) waiting, not knowing what has happened with their children, with their husbands, their uncles," Thulas Nxesi, South Africa's employment and labour minister, told reporters on site. Nxesi said the government would conduct its own investigation. The cause of the collapse is yet to be established. "We still hope and pray that we can get people out alive," Anton Bredell, a Western Cape provincial minister, said. The identities of the missing have not been made public, but a list of names was circulating among groups of relatives who have congregated at the site since Monday, desperate for news of their loved ones, state broadcaster SABC reported.

April transactions index increase welcome, but investors wait and see

Financial infrastructure services company BankservAfrica's Economic Transactions Index (BETI) increased by 0.6% month-on-month in April to reach an index level of 134.2, which is the highest level in eight months. While loadshedding, which has remained suspended since the end of March, may have had a positive impact on economic activity in April, the upcoming elections might have also played a role, the company noted.

Property developer Equites Property Fund has officially started wheeling renewable energy onto Cape Town’s grid from solar panels atop its newly built distribution centre in Parow. The company is among the first to begin wheeling energy for the municipal grid, with its current offtaker being a commercial office block on the Foreshore, where Equites is headquartered.

South Africa’s Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) says it will continue to invest in Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2 while legal proceedings around its selection of International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI), of the Philippines, for a 25-year partnership at what is South Africa’s largest container terminal. Rival bidder AP Moller–Maersk, of Denmark, is contesting Transnet selection of ICTSI, which was made in July last year, calling the award unlawful and invalid.
Airlink adopting IATA’s New Distribution Capability

South African regional and domestic airline Airlink has announced that it is to implement the New Distribution Capability (NDC) for its transactions with the travel trade, with effect from July 31 this year. NDC was launched by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is a data exchange format, using Offer and Order management processes to enable airlines to create and distribute relevant offers to customers, irrespective of the distribution channel. NDC is supported by the travel industry. It replaces the around 40-year-old Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport protocol.
