Wine bottles Wine grape supply balances with demand in 2024 harvest season

The 2024 wine grape harvest has yielded 1.09-million tonnes from 87 848 ha, which is 7% lower than the prior harvest season, industry body Vinpro reports. Vinpro consultation services manager Dr Etienne Terblanche says the 2024 harvest season was a journey marked by careful planning and the adaptability of wine producers in the face of diverse climatic adversities and various disruptions.

JSE-listed integrated poultry producer Astral Foods has reported improved results for the six months ended March 31, on the back of its “reset, refocus and restart campaign” which was launched in response to significant losses incurred from loadshedding and avian influenza in the 2023 financial year. The group reports an operating profit increase of 461% to R550-million for the six months under review, compared with an operating profit of R98-million reported for the six months ended March 31, 2023.

This was highlighted by speakers presenting the reports on May 17.
Altron posts strong continuing operations growth

JSE-listed Altron on Monday reported strong results across its continuing operations; however, noncash adjustments in its discontinued operations weighed on the company’s overall results for the year ended February 29, 2024. The company reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda), including Altron’s ATM Business and discontinued operations, of R985-million, a 6% decrease on the R1.05-billion achieved in the prior year.
Apollo Africa MD Jenna Harris Energy trader reports strong market demand for green electricity from 210 MW Hendrina Wind Farm

Newly formed electricity trader Apollo Africa reports that it is experiencing strong demand from potential customers for the renewable electricity that will be produced from the grid-ready 210 MW Hendrina Wind Farm, being developed by Enertrag in the Mpumalanga province. Apollo Africa, which is majority-owned by JSE-listed Reunert and is in the final stages of securing a trading licence from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, has entered into an exclusive agreement with Enertrag for the electricity that will be produced at the facility.
DWS set to submit NWRIA Bill to Presidency

Following the adoption of the National Water Resource Infrastructure Agency (NWRIA) Bill, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is preparing to submit it to President Cyril Ramaphosa for final sign-off. The Bill, which aims to establish the NWRIA to ensure sustainable, equitable and reliable supply of water from national water resources infrastructure, was adopted earlier in May by the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation and the National Assembly.
The Ngqura container terminal TPT starts financial year off with increases in bulk, container volumes

State-owned ports manager Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has recorded a 10% year-on-year increase in container volumes moved across all 19 of its terminals in the first six weeks of the 2024/25 financial year. Bulk volumes and break-bulk volumes were also up by 5% and 17%, respectively, compared with the first six weeks of the prior financial year.
Scrap metals Get Steel invites comment on proposed foundry project in Benoni

Local steel processing company Get Steel has invited interested and affected parties to submit comments on a draft scoping report into the refurbishment of the Naledi Foundry, in Benoni, Gauteng. The company also intends to install additional infrastructure and equipment to establish a new billet and precision casting foundry on the remainder of the site.
Development finance agency highlights Africa’s infrastructure needs and opportunities

The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), which exists to catalyse private-sector investment in African infrastructure, on Friday released its latest report, State of Africa’s Infrastructure Report 2024: The infrastructure imperative: Igniting Africa’s Industrial Renaissance. This found that the continent had an “unprecedented opportunity” to impel its development by bringing its substantial renewable energy resources, and solutions for its deficient infrastructure, into alignment. “The report is not just about identifying challenges; it’s about unlocking the immense potential that lies within our collective resolve,” stressed AFC president and CEO Samaila Zubairu. “The State of Africa’s Infrastructure Report is a call to action for stakeholders across the continent to collaborate for a smarter, more targeted, and better coordinated investment approach.”
Petco recycling bins Tshwane’s first separation-at-source project in a public space signals success

A separation-at-source recycling campaign, called S@S, at Tshwane’s public Fountains Valley Resort – a collaboration between the City of Tshwane and producer responsibility organisation Petco – is being described by officials as a success, with plans to extend it to other resorts and public areas in the city. Since February, visitors to the Fountains Valley Resort have been greeted by 12 large colour-coded and labelled recycling bins as part of the city’s first S@S recycling campaign in a public space.
