Uranium exploration company Madison Metals has reported that reverse circulation (RC) drill hole KM5RC003 at its Khan project, in Namibia, has intersected strong uranium mineralisation over mineable widths under trench area TR003. Spectrometer readings from chip-sample bags returned values as high as 1.36% triuranium oxide at 45 m and 1.54% at 148 m vertical depth from surface.

The use of national electricity grids to wheel power from renewable-energy projects to demand centres is growing in Africa and helping to drive greater scale in the building of renewable-energy generation, says private equity investment group African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) investment principal Anyababa Ikem. Strides were being made to increase the ability of renewable-energy players, such as the projects AIIM invests in, to wheel power across infrastructure on the continent, he added during a May 24 briefing held by the company to showcase some of the $900-million worth of investments it had made into renewable-energy projects in Africa, to date.

A successful takeover of Anglo American under the arrangements BHP Group has offered could lead to outflows of $4.3-billion from South Africa, according to a JPMorgan Chase & Co. analysis. Such an outflow, if a deal goes ahead, could weaken the rand, which has gained 4.4% against the dollar, the most of 16 major currencies tracked by Bloomberg, over the last five weeks.

Ruthenium, one of the six platinum-group metals (PGMs), is once again being given major research attention in view of it being exceptionally suited to uplifting the efficiency and sustainability of green hydrogen production from green ammonia. Late last year, it was a ruthenium-based catalyst that augmented the scarcity of iridium, another PGM, in the production of green hydrogen from water electrolysis.

Nonprofit activist organisation Just Share has accused ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) of sub-par AGM governance because the chairperson closed the company’s AGM on May 24 before addressing a question posed by the nonprofit. “This is surprising given the high levels of civil society engagement at its AGMs in recent years,” Just Share said on May 27, while noting that this was the first AMSA AGM it had attended.

In support of their shared ambitions to reduce carbon emissions and meet a net-zero operational greenhouse-gas emissions target by 2050, diversified miners BHP and Rio Tinto are partnering with heavy equipment original-equipment manufacturers Caterpillar and Komatsu to trial two large battery-electric haul trucks at the miner’s operations in the Pilbara of Australia. These trials represent the first stage of battery-electric haul truck testing at BHP’s and Rio Tinto’s Pilbara operations.
