Development finance agency highlights Africa’s infrastructure needs and opportunities
Published: 17 May 24
The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), which exists to catalyse private-sector investment in African infrastructure, on Friday released its latest report, State of Africa’s Infrastructure Report 2024: The infrastructure imperative: Igniting Africa’s Industrial Renaissance. This found that the continent had an “unprecedented opportunity” to impel its development by bringing its substantial renewable energy resources, and solutions for its deficient infrastructure, into alignment. “The report is not just about identifying challenges; it’s about unlocking the immense potential that lies within our collective resolve,” stressed AFC president and CEO Samaila Zubairu. “The State of Africa’s Infrastructure Report is a call to action for stakeholders across the continent to collaborate for a smarter, more targeted, and better coordinated investment approach.”

United Airlines is committed to net-zero carbon emissions flying by 2050
Published: 17 May 24
US-based global major carrier United Airlines is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, its Director Sales: Continental Europe, India, Israel, Africa & Middle East Thorsten Lettnin, assures Engineering News, in an exclusive interview. (Net-zero emissions is not the same thing as zero emissions; in general terms, net zero means that carbon emissions into the atmosphere are balanced by carbon being removed from the atmosphere; as far as the airline industry is concerned, it means ensuring that its carbon emissions in 2050 are no greater than they were in 2019, despite the ongoing massive expansion (100%, every ten years) in the sector.) “We’re heavily into sustainability,” he affirms. “This is really close to our hearts. We are a founder-member of the First Mover Coalition, a grouping of major US corporations committed to cutting their carbon footprints.”

BHP needs to bid about £32 a share for Anglo, JPMorgan says
Published: 17 May 24
HP Group would need to boost its latest offer around 30% to reflect fair value for Anglo American and its key copper assets, JPMorgan analysts said in a note.
They raised their price target for London-listed Anglo to £27.75 a share after reexamining the value of its copper assets, and said the discount for the shares to the implied value of BHP's offer was at its greatest level, implying the market sees a deal as unlikely.
