Australian natural gas industry seeks policy repairs to boost investment

Australia's natural gas industry executives are seeking more measures to restore an investment environment they say has been damaged by a series of state interventions to boost domestic supply and curb soaring energy prices. While most executives at the Australian Energy Producers Conference in Perth were broadly in favour of the Australia Future Gas strategy unveiled by the government this month, they called for immediate action and improvements to the policy to avoid new gas supply shortfalls.

Equinox marks first gold pour at Greenstone mine

Canadian miner Equinox Gold has successfully poured its first gold at the newly built Greenstone mine, in Ontario. The inaugural gold pour occurred on schedule, with the recovery circuit yielding 1 800 oz of gold. Equinox reports that all equipment functioned as expected during the process.

Hecla appoints interim CEO as Baker resigns

Silver producer Hecla Mining on Thursday announced the appointment of Catherine Bogg as interim president and CEO with immediate effect, succeeding Phillips Baker, who is stepping down after 23 years at the company. Boggs, who is currently chairperson, will be assisted in management the affairs of Hecla by a committee comprising senior CFO VP Russell Lawlar, VP of operations Carlos Aguilar and senior VP – chief administrative officer Mike Clary.

Large Anglo shareholders are backing miner’s stance on BHP talks

Several of Anglo American’s big shareholders have said they support the company’s efforts to persuade BHP Group to change the structure of its takeover proposal or compensate for the risks it presents, before accepting any offer. BHP has one week to convince its target of the value of its $49-billion acquisition plan, after Anglo announced on Wednesday it had rebuffed a third bid and agreed to extend a regulatory deadline. With the clock reset, discussions will center around BHP’s insistence that Anglo spin off majority stakes in South African platinum and iron ore units before the takeover can proceed.

Mining sorting equipment manufacturer TOMRA Mining highlights that its XRT technology, powered by TOMRA Insight, has delivered significant results at the Mothae Diamonds operation, in Lesotho. Global diamond producer Lucapa Diamonds owns 70% of Mothae Diamonds, a mine located in the Maluti mountains of Lesotho, a region known to produce large, high-value diamonds that command the second-highest dollar per carat for kimberlite diamonds worldwide.

DC furnaces aid autocatalyst recovery

The recycling of used automotive catalytic converters (autocatalysts) has become economically and environmentally important in the wake of autocatalysts becoming one of the most significant consumers of platinum group metals (PGM) for their manufacture, according to alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) furnaces designer and fabricator Allied Furnace Consultants (AFC) founder and director Tertius Pieters. He notes that the recovery of PGMs from autocatalysts is a new and evolving process in terms of historical metals recycling, globally.

Funds drawn to progress manganese project

Battery metals developer Giyani Metals, on April 24, acknowledged receipt of R110-million ($5.7-million) as part of its first drawing down of funds from its convertible loan facilities granted by the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC). Giyani’s IDC loan facility totals $16-million (R308.76-million).

Diamond miner progresses move to underground

Ahead of its fifty-fifth anniversary, Botswana-based diamond miner Debswana Diamond Company is undertaking an expansion project at its flagship Jwaneng mine, in the south-central part of Botswana, to extend its life-of-mine and generate new value for shareholders, says Debswana deputy MD Koolatotse Koolatotse. The Jwaneng Underground Project aims to develop a safe and viable underground mine to sustain production of diamonds beyond open pit operations.
