High regulatory and legislative barriers in the quarrying sector are constraining its growth, says quarrying and surface mining professional body Institute of Quarrying Southern Africa (IQSA) chairperson Jeremy Hunter-Smith. This is compounded, he says, by the 20% downturn in the construction industry in the first quarter of 2024.  A country’s growth in often gauged by the volume of infrastructure projects and South Africa has huge potential for growth, with a drive for infrastructure development needing to come to the forefront.

Addressing youth unemployment and the associated skills deficit are crucial for ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for the South African mining sector. The private-sector-led Youth Employment Service (YES) initiative plays a key role in this effort, aligning industry needs with the development of high-potential youth, says YES strategic research and marketing services head Simona Mazza. The mining industry continues to directly employ about 481 000 people, according to Statistics South Africa, and provides at least that many jobs in supporting industries, she elaborates. Further, the industry generates substantial government revenue through taxes and royalties.

Amid a challenging economic landscape marked by scarce job opportunities, platinum group metals (PGM) mining company Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) remains committed to fostering local business growth and opening employment avenues for its host communities. “The primary challenge in South Africa is the high youth unemployment rate. There is no lack of talent or willing youth in South Africa, but rather a lack of job opportunities available to them,” says Implats corporate communication group head Alice Lourens.   She adds that the Southern Africa operating environment poses further hurdles, as the region is impacted on by persistent political and socioeconomic challenges, sluggish global growth, weakening local currencies, soaring inflation and interest rates, power and water disruptions and poor service delivery.

The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident and yet a key component of the fight to preserve lives and livelihoods, namely adaptation funding, has stagnated, according to attendees of last month’s Africa Climate Roundtable. The event – hosted by African Risk Capacity (ARC), alongside various climate- and development-focused organisations, including the Africa Adaptation Initiative, the World Food Programme, the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the African Capacity Building Foundation, the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, the African Export-Import Bank, and the African Guarantee Fund – took place on May 7 and 8, mere days after the Kenyan government ordered evacuations for at-risk citizens, following weeks of heavy rainfall and flooding.

According to contractor Concor, these include post-tensioning the anchor blocks, installing pylon inserts and building the ladder deck.

Construction Group Enza Construction and electrical engineering and infrastructure development company Tractionel Enterprise are assisting in the process of reviving South Africa’s rail and freight sector operations, thereby contributing to the country’s rail infrastructure development and maintenance. Tractionel Enterprise – which was acquired by Enza Construction in 2021 – has been appointed by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) on the Belle Ombre-Hercules-Koedoespoort corridor for the repair and/or replacement of 60 km of overhead traction equipment (OHTE).
