Discovering new materials has historically been slow. Now artificial intelligence (AI) is making it possible to discover a material entirely computationally and have that verified experimentally. An example of this is AI being used to create a permanent magnet that does not contain any rare earth – and this is just the start, Materials Nexus chief technical officer and co-founder Robert Forrest outlined to Mining Weekly in a Zoom interview. The World Bank expects the global economy to stabilise for the first time in three years, but at a level that is still weak by historical standards. In its latest ‘Global Economic Prospects’ report, the World Bank says global growth will reach 2.6% this year and 2.7% in 2025 and 2026, compared with the 3.1% average in the decade before Covid-19.

South Africa’s manufacturing production increased by 5.3% year-on-year in April, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has reported. Stats SA Industry statistics director Nicolai Carson said on June 11 that, out of the ten manufacturing divisions, nine showed positive growth.
US BLM approves follow up drilling at Arizona Lithium’s Big Sandy

The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued Arizona Lithium a permit for a drill and bulk sampling programme at the Big Sandy project, in Arizona. The ASX-listed company is now set to start a long-awaited follow up drill programme at Big Sandy, which currently contains a resource of 320 800 lithium-carbon equivalent.

Canada-headquartered miner Ivanhoe Mines has achieved first concentrate production at the Kamoa-Kakula operation’s Phase 3 concentrator, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Phase 3 concentrator was completed nearly two quarters ahead of schedule and is expected to increase Kamoa-Kakula’s output to more than 600 000 t/y of copper once it is fully ramped up.

Australia’s Element25 is investigating the potential restart of operations at the Butcherbird manganese project in Western Australia to capitalise on the recent surge in manganese ore prices. Prices have escalated following disruptions at South32’s Groote Eylandt (Gemco) operations in the Northern Territory. Typically producing over six-million tonnes a year of high-grade manganese, the Groote Eylandt mine has faced disruptions due to damage to its haul road and ship loading facilities from a tropical cyclone in March. This damage is expected to impact supply for at least a year.

Despite the current economic climate presenting slowing growth, characterised by high inflationary pressure, increasing costs of property rates, the lack of delivery of basic utilities such as electricity and water, as well as consumer pressure, real estate investment trust Liberty Two Degrees (L2D) says its assets continue to “stand out”. L2D reports that its retail assets delivered “market leading” trading performance.

The revenue of South Africa’s quickly advancing Northern Cape copper mining company Copper 360, the only pure copper play on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, is forecast by the company to have risen sharply by the end of February next year. The AltX-listed company headed by CEO Jan Nelson, is guiding revenue of R1.2-billion to R1.9-billion at the end of February next year, from the R38.2-million revenue level generated in the 12 months to the end of February this year.  (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.)
Oriole starts delayed Phase 5 drilling at Cameroon project

Aim-listed Oriole Resources has advised of a number of logistical challenges hampering a Phase 5 drilling programme on the main mineral resource area of its Bibemi gold project, in Cameroon. Despite the delays, Oriole expects the 7 060 m drill programme across 62 holes in the Bakassi Zone 1 prospect of Bibemi to conclude by the end of the third quarter.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has upheld a decision by the city’s Municipal Planning Tribunal to impose a record R1-million penalty for unauthorised building work. The penalty relates to a developer, named as Steven Kampies, constructing a 22-unit apartment building where only a single dwelling is permitted.
