Metals Australia granted drilling permits for Corvette River

Canada-focused Metals Australia has received all the required permitting approvals for a new drilling and trenching programme at Corvette River, in Quebec. The programme, which will include 10 diamond drillholes for up to 4 750 m and about 16 trenches, will test high-grade gold and silver targets, as well as priority lithium-bearing pegmatite targets.

The Biden administration on Thursday proposed an end to future coal leasing on federal lands in Montana and Wyoming's Powder River Basin, the nation's most productive coal-producing region, in part because of the sector's emissions that worsen climate change. The two proposals from the US Bureau of Land Management respond to a 2022 federal court order requiring the agency to analyse the climate and public health impacts of burning fossil fuels in its land use plans for the areas.

Reserve Bank warns carbon taxes may cut exports by 10%

South African economic growth could be severely stunted if carbon taxes are widely imposed on its exports, according to a new report by the country’s central bank. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) said the hit could reach 10% of exports and more than 9% of gross domestic product in 2050 under a worst-case scenario in which carbon taxes are slapped on all exports by all trading partners. But it also found the impact could be much lighter, in a summary of several studies into the implications of the European Union’a new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism on South African exports.

BHP shares hit 3-month high as deadline for formal Anglo bid looms

Shares of BHP Group touched a three-month high on Tuesday about 36 hours ahead of a deadline to lodge a formal bid for rival miner Anglo American, which last week rejected a sweetened $43-billion takeover proposal. The world's largest listed miner's shares are benefiting from good news including fresh stimulus for China's property sector, copper prices reaching record highs and a growing view that BHP will not make another tilt at Anglo, according to Andy Forster, senior investment officer at Argo Investments, a BHP shareholder.
