Exploration company TMC has successfully produced nickel sulphate exclusively from seafloor polymetallic nodules. This, the Nasdaq company says, has never been accomplished before. Conducted in collaboration with SGS Canada at its Lakefield, Ontario facility, the process involved bench-scale testing of TMC’s hydrometallurgical flowsheet design. Samples of nickel/cobalt/copper matte, produced by TMC in 2021, were used for testing.

ASX-listed Invictus Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that could lead to a maiden gas offtake agreement with Dallaglio Investments, involving the supply of gas to the Eureka gold mine, in Zimbabwe. Invictus will supply natural gas from the Cabora Bassa project, in Zimbabwe, as feedstock for the Dallaglio’s proposed gas-to-power (GtP) plant.

The green hydrogen sector now has a digital platform on which users can buy and sell green hydrogen by the click of a button, it was announced on Tuesday.  Euronext-listed Lhyfe, the French group devoted to energy transition, has begun taking of orders for green hydrogen in Europe and facilitating contacts between buyers and sellers. NYSE- and ASX-listed Metals Acquisition Limited (MAC) has announced a new resource and reserve statement for the CSA copper mine, in Australia, outlining a vision for a long-life operation. Highlights from the resources and reserves statement include a 67% increase in mine life to 11 years, based on ore reserves only, compared with a six-year mine life in the 2022 statement.

Swedish miner Boliden's first-quarter operating profit fell more than 50% as bad winter weather, lower mining grades and labour strikes weighed on earnings, it said on Tuesday. Operating profit fell 52% to 1.62-billion Swedish crowns ($148.80-million) from 3.41-billion in the first quarter of 2023 and compared with the 1.55-billion crowns expected by analysts in an LSEG poll.

China's coal consumption will fall by just one-third by 2040, according to a report by a European consultancy published on Tuesday, threatening climate targets that call for phasing out much of global coal use by 2040. The International Energy Agency has said that global coal power capacity has to be eliminated by 2040 to keep average global temperature rises within the key threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

NYSE- and JSE-listed petrochemicals company Sasol says its energy business benefitted from higher basic fuel prices, as well as improved refining margins towards the end of the nine months ended March 31, which helped to offset operational headwinds at the group’s mining and Secunda operations. Sasol’s mining productivity has improved albeit at a slower pace than expected. The group expects to meet the lower end of its coal productivity guidance range of between 975 t and 1 100 t per continuous miner per shift for the full-year ending on June 30.

Anglo American subsidiary Kumba Iron Ore has reported a 10% year-on-year decrease in sales to 8.5-million tonnes for the quarter ended March 31, on the back of port performance challenges. About 400 000 t of shipments have been rolled over to the second quarter as a result.

JSE-listed copper miner Copper 360 has informed shareholders that it has noticed "unusual and uncommercial" trades in its shares, resulting in a substantial drop in its traded price. "The trades in question have continued on a systematic and sustained basis for a period of several weeks," it says in a notice published on the JSE's Stock Exchange News Service.

Copper production increasing by 11% as Quellaveco achieved its highest plant throughput rate in Peru, and Collahuasi and El Soldado in Chile benefitting from higher copper grades were among the first-quarter performance aspects that pleased diversified mining company Anglo American in the three months ending March 31. “We’re driving operational excellence across our assets, focusing on stability and effective cost management as levers to deliver significant value through the cycle,” Anglo CE Duncan Wanblad highlighted in a release to Mining Weekly on Tuesday.
