Canada unions brace for 2025 labour crunch in oil sands maintenance season
Published: 17 Apr 24
Annual maintenance on Canada's oil sands plants is forecast to cause no more disruption than usual this year, but trade union officials are warning of a labour crunch during Alberta's 2025 turnaround season as construction takes off on two new industrial projects. Every year producers in Alberta hire thousands of extra skilled workers to execute essential maintenance on oil sands upgraders, thermal projects and refineries. Canada is the world's fourth-largest oil producer, and roughly two-thirds of its 4.9-million barrels per day (bpd) of crude come from northern Alberta's oil sands.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has belatedly moved to quell concern that its recent approval of a new loadshedding code of practice, which increases the number of potential stages from eight to 16, represented a signal that the prospect for higher levels of loadshedding was imminent. Following extensive public consultations undertaken by the National Rationalised Specifications (NRS) Association of South Africa, the third edition of the NRS048-9 standard was approved by the regulator for use by Eskom and municipal system operators during times of electricity constraint.

German coal mines spew 184 times more methane than what the country reports to the United Nations, according to a new analysis by Ember. The energy think tank used methodology developed by scientists that takes into account the gas content of coal and mining depths to estimate the emissions, which cast fresh scrutiny on Germany’s strategy of pivoting towards fossil fuels in the wake of Japan’s 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
