Electric Metals confirms Minnesota’s Emily as premier high-grade manganese resource Electric Metals confirms Minnesota’s Emily as premier high-grade manganese resource
Published: 27 May 24
US-based developer Electric Metals has unveiled an upgraded mineral resource estimate for its Emily manganese project, solidifying the Minnesota project as the continent’s “highest-grade manganese resource”. At a 10% cutoff grade, Emily’s indicated resources increased by 20.9% to 6.2-million tons, with a grade of 19.27% manganese. Inferred resources surged by 596.5% to 4.9-million tons, with a grade of 17.5%.
Barrick's Porgera mine in PNG operating without restriction after landslide Barrick's Porgera mine in PNG operating without restriction after landslide
Published: 27 May 24
The Porgera Mine in Papua New Guinea is running without restriction and has enough fuel on site for 40 days, operator Barrick Gold said on Monday, after a massive landslide struck in the province the mine is located. The landslide in Enga province buried more than 2 000 people, the government said earlier on Monday, as treacherous terrain impeded aid and lowered hopes of finding survivors.

PCC executive director Dr Crispian Olver Delayed coal decommissioning won’t ‘collapse our climate commitments’
Published: 27 May 24
The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) is currently assessing the impact of South Africa’s decision to delay the decommissioning of the Hendrina, Grootvlei and Camden coal-fired power stations on the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which outlines the country’s decarbonisation goals. Eskom confirmed recently that Cabinet and board permission had been granted for the continued operation of the three power stations beyond their original decommissioning dates, owing to the ongoing shortage of supply and delays in adding new generation.
drilling at khan Madison intersects strong uranium mineralisation at Khan
Published: 27 May 24
Uranium exploration company Madison Metals has reported that reverse circulation (RC) drill hole KM5RC003 at its Khan project, in Namibia, has intersected strong uranium mineralisation over mineable widths under trench area TR003. Spectrometer readings from chip-sample bags returned values as high as 1.36% triuranium oxide at 45 m and 1.54% at 148 m vertical depth from surface.
A BHP logo on a building JPMorgan says BHP plan risks $4.3bn South Africa outflow
Published: 27 May 24
A successful takeover of Anglo American under the arrangements BHP Group has offered could lead to outflows of $4.3-billion from South Africa, according to a JPMorgan Chase & Co. analysis. Such an outflow, if a deal goes ahead, could weaken the rand, which has gained 4.4% against the dollar, the most of 16 major currencies tracked by Bloomberg, over the last five weeks.
Valuable use of ruthenium being researched. Ruthenium highlighted again in what could be another big boost for platinum group metals
Published: 27 May 24
Ruthenium, one of the six platinum-group metals (PGMs), is once again being given major research attention in view of it being exceptionally suited to uplifting the efficiency and sustainability of green hydrogen production from green ammonia. Late last year, it was a ruthenium-based catalyst that augmented the scarcity of iridium, another PGM, in the production of green hydrogen from water electrolysis.
BHP and Rio Tinto will receive Caterpillar and Komatsu battery-electric haul trucks for trialling purposes, with the outcomes to be shared between the two companies, as well as for further development purposes by the original equipment manufacturers BHP, Rio Tinto collaborate to expand battery-electric haul truck development
Published: 27 May 24
In support of their shared ambitions to reduce carbon emissions and meet a net-zero operational greenhouse-gas emissions target by 2050, diversified miners BHP and Rio Tinto are partnering with heavy equipment original-equipment manufacturers Caterpillar and Komatsu to trial two large battery-electric haul trucks at the miner’s operations in the Pilbara of Australia. These trials represent the first stage of battery-electric haul truck testing at BHP’s and Rio Tinto’s Pilbara operations.
Panellists discuss graphite demand and rare earth supply chains at Junior Indaba
Published: 27 May 24
With growing demand for electric vehicles, yearly graphite supply needs to be about four times higher in 2030, and about nine times higher in 2040, than at present, owing to its use in energy transition-related products, such as lithium-ion batteries. During a presentation at the Junior Indaba last week, ASX-listed Walkabout Resources CEO Andrew Cunningham said natural graphite demand would exceed supply in 2025, noting that flake graphite production would require $7.57-billion in capital expenditure investment to meet battery demand in 2035.
