Southern Palladium appoints new nonexecutive director

Dual-listed Southern Palladium has announced the appointment of Advocate Lindi Nkosi-Thomas as a nonexecutive director, effective from June 10. Nkosi-Thomas, a practising lawyer and senior counsel, is a member of the Johannesburg Bar, having been called to the Bar in November 1994. She was conferred the status of silk by then-President Jacob Zuma in 2009.

Uranium exploration and development company Blue Sky has announced a transaction that could set the path to bring the Ivana uranium deposit, in Argentina, into production. Blue Sky has entered a binding term sheet with Argentinian firm Corredor Americano (COAM) to complete an option agreement in respect to the Ivana deposit.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson on Monday announced two investments of C$5-million each to support the critical minerals sector in Canada, specifically in northern Ontario. The funding recipients are the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) and Electra Battery Materials (Electra).

Canadian mining company Premium Nickel Resources will raise C$27.5-million through an upsized private placement offer, the company announced on Monday. This is an increase from the initial C$15-million offering, reflecting strong interest, primarily from existing shareholders, said the TSX-V-listed firm.

State-owned power utility Eskom says the security investigation team at its Arnot power station has arrested a truck driver, who is suspected of having participated in the swapping out of coal destined for the power station with lower-quality product. On June 8, a tactical team spotted a truck loaded with coal to be delivered to Arnot entering a coal yard in Middelburg and then leaving after about an hour.

Codelco attributed a sharp drop in production at its top mine to the lingering effects of a rock collapse last year as the world’s No. 1 copper supplier strives to reverse slumping output. “This situation was foreseen in annual planning and does not affect the committed production budget,” the state-owned company said in a written response to questions about the massive El Teniente mine.

Commodities giant Rio Tinto will increase its interest Boyne Smelters (BSL), which owns and operates the Boyne Island aluminium smelter in Gladstone, Australia, to 73.5%. The company has agreed to acquire Mitsubishi’s 11.65% interest in BSL. This follows the recent agreement to acquire Sumitomo Chemical Company’s 2.46% interest in BSL.

A coalition of civil society organisations from Indonesia, Senegal, South Africa and Vietnam on June 10 launched their ‘Principles for a Fair Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP)’, which emphasises the integral need for accountability, transparency and equity in climate finance. International renewable energy advocacy organisation 350.org said the guiding principles were identified with the input of Global South communities.

A 15-year agreement involving the supply of an initial 70 000 t of green hydrogen a year has been signed by TotalEnergies and Air Products. TotalEnergies, which is active in some 120 countries and which cites sustainability as being at the heart of its strategy, is setting out to reduce the net greenhouse gas emissions from its oil and gas operations by 40% by 2030.

Botswana said it’s in talks over increasing its shareholding in De Beers, as Anglo American prepares to end its almost century-long relationship with the iconic diamond producer. As part of a turnaround plan to fend off an approach from BHP Group, Anglo last month said it planned to sell or separate De Beers, in which it holds an 85% stake. The remainder is owned by Botswana, the southern African nation that holds the company’s biggest diamond mines.
