Mall of Africa Attacq subsidiary acquires remaining 20% stake in Mall of Africa

JSE-listed real estate investment trust (Reit) Attacq’s 70% held subsidiary, Attacq Waterfall Investment Company (AWIC), has acquired the remaining 20% stake in Mall of Africa from the Atterbury Group. AWIC already held an 80% stake in the asset.

Decarbonisation requires comprehensive and multifaceted approaches and standardised processes across various industries. It should involve mobilising an organisation, managing information flow, digitising operations to manage the complexity of the circular economy and decarbonising supply chains to reach net zero. These were the views shared by Siemens managing board member and Siemens Smart Infrastructure CEO Matthias Rebellius, Mercedes-Benz planning VP Arno van der Merwe and Schwarz Unternehmenskommunikation corporate responsibility VP Florion Shütze, in a panel discussion on strategies necessary to decarbonise industrial operations, at the international Hannover Messe 2024 expo, in late April, in Hannover, Germany.
Power line and substation NamPower grid-strengthening and battery storage project secures $138.5m World Bank backing

The World Bank has approved a $138.5-million finance package to support the integration of renewable energy into Namibia’s electricity system by strengthening its transmission grid and integrating a second utility scale battery storage system into the country’s network. The initiative, which is Namibia’s first-ever World Bank financed energy project, will be implemented by NamPower, with the aim of minimising outage risks, supporting load growth, and unlocking future opportunities for power trade in the Southern African Power Pool.

Africa's most advanced economy is usually seen as a good entry point for companies to expand into the continent and Amazon could be doing the same, analysts have said in the past.
MTN achieves record 98% network availability in Limpopo

As telecommunications giant MTN South Africa accelerates its nationwide modernisation programme, the company has achieved a record 98.33% network availability daily in Limpopo. The 2024 resilience plan, which was completed in the first quarter of 2024, aims to ensure that all sites have power backup, such as batteries or hybrid generators, on hub sites to minimise network unavailability during loadshedding, load reduction and extended power failures.

Rescuers searched through the debris of a multi-storey building collapse in the South African city of George that left four people dead and dozens still trapped early on Tuesday. Twenty-four construction workers who were at the site of the unfinished building when it collapsed have been removed from the rubble so far, while 51 remained unaccounted for, the municipality of George, a coastal city east of Cape Town, said in a statement.
Denel displays guided weapons, landward defence systems at Defence Service Asia

State-owned defence technology company Denel is displaying its guided weapons and landward defence systems at the Defence Service Asia (DSA) exhibition this week. Its Umkhonto surface-to-air missile can be launched from naval vessels or ground-based launchers. It travels at more than twice the speed of sound, can be configured to carry up to eight missiles and can reach simultaneous targets.

In her latest weekly newsletter, Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busisiwe Mavuso warns that South Africa could face a “gas cliff” when the supply of gas to industrial users ceases in 2026. In the May 6 newsletter, she says this is a crisis for businesses that collectively employ 70 000 people and generate R500-billion a year for the economy and argues that this crisis can only be avoided with a coordinated and rapid plan between business and government.
Shell to exit South Africa's downstream businesses

Oil major Shell will divest its majority shareholding from a local South African downstream unit after a comprehensive review of its businesses across all regions, it said on Monday. "As a result of this review, Shell has decided to reshape the downstream portfolio and intends to divest our shareholding in SDSA ... this decision was not taken lightly," a Shell statement said. It did not specify when the decision took effect.
