South Africa’s official unemployment rate has widened by 0.8 of a percentage point to 32.9% in the first quarter of the year, compared with 32.1% in the fourth quarter of last year. The number of employed people in South Africa increased by 22 000 to 16.7-million, but the number of unemployed people increased by 330 000 to 8.2-million, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reports.

Forensic Pathology Services (FPS) and the South African Police Service are planning to expedite the identification of persons killed in a building collapse in George, in the Western Cape, with only six of the 32 deceased persons identified thus far. Eighty-one people were working on site on the partially built building when it collapsed on May 6.
MTN Q1 performance muted on ongoing macroenvironment challenges

JSE-listed MTN on Tuesday posted a dip in service revenue and earnings during the first quarter of the year, amid ongoing high inflation and local currency devaluations in some of its key markets. The group reported a 28.7% contraction in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) from R24.27-billion in the first quarter of 2023 to R17.3-billion in the first quarter of 2024.

The Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) – in support of Power Africa, a US government-led partnership – and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) South Africa, launched Phase 2 of the Just Energy Transition (JET) Technical Training for Women in Electrical and Renewable Energy Programme, in Limpopo, on May 10. Women electricians and artisans in Limpopo will receive specialised technical training at seven technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges in the province.

The solar storm which hit Earth on Friday and Saturday was the most severe to affect South and Southern Africa in 21 years, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has reported. Calgro M3 CEO Wikus Lategan Calgro M3 issues maiden dividend, posts robust results

Residential-focused property developer Calgro M3 has issued a maiden dividend of 9.49c a share after posting a record gross profit margin of 27.25% for the financial year ended February 29, and profit after tax increased to R196.8-million, up from R186.29-million in the preceding financial year. The company also published a dividend policy that will see it pay yearly dividends to a minimum of 5% of headline earnings a share. The total dividend payable is R10.86-million for the financial year under review.

The South African poultry industry is calling for immediate intervention to avert an outbreak of the H7N6 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that it is grappling with, following a year of significant losses, including the culling of 9.5-million birds. While traditionally reliant on a stamping out policy, the industry acknowledges the inefficiency of this approach against the H7N6 strain, industry organisation the South African Poultry Association (SAPA) said.
