McKinsey & Company McKinsey to pay SA R1.1bn for its role in State capture

The National Prosecuting Authority announced that it has successfully concluded dispute resolution with McKinsey South Africa, in which McKinsey will pay about R1.1-billion into South Africa's Criminal Assets Recovery Account, owing to the social and economic harm caused by one of its former employees. McKinsey will also have to assist the Investigating Directorate in its criminal investigations by continuing to hand over any relevant information and materials in its possession. This resolution follows international cooperation between the NPA and the US Department of Justice, coordinated with US criminal justice processes, which the NPA said had resulted in a settlement agreement confirmed today by a US Federal Court.

Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mmakgoshi Lekhethe, a senior official from the National Treasury, as the first woman CEO of the State-owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Lekhethe is currently deputy director-general for asset and liability management at the National Treasury and has over 20 years of experience in the public finance sector.
Main non-tariff barrier in Africa is infrastructure; potential lies in non-traditional markets

A significant non-tariff barrier (NTB) that business in Africa faces is infrastructure deficiencies, which is hampering growth, specifically for the 16 landlocked countries in Africa that are dependent on maritime-connected economies and their neighbours' infrastructure, said trade consultancy Trade Research Advisory MD Martin Cameron. There were a raft of NTBs facing companies doing business in Africa. The difficulty lay not in identifying them, but putting in place mitigation strategies to eliminate or eradicate them, said business organisation Business Unity South Africa economic policy director Lunga Maloyi.

Private- and public-sector representatives have, this week, emphasised that there are potential solutions to South Africa's logistics problems and bottlenecks, that funding is limited and that collaboration among private companies, labour and government is necessary to address the problems. Speakers participating in a 'Logistics Roadmap to unlock greater efficiency and sustainability' panel discussion, during a transport engagement platform organisation Transport Forum conference on December 4, also highlighted the many barriers and delays all parts of the logistics sector face.
