Despite the deterioration of South Africa’s aging transport infrastructure and a challenging operating environment, end-to-end logistics and supply chain solutions provider Unitrans CEO Edwin Hewitt is hopeful about the future of supply chain management and logistics in South Africa, emphasising the value of data-driven decision-making. Hewitt is an advisor to Ian Bird, the senior executive responsible for the transport and logistics focal area at Business for South Africa (B4SA), an alliance of South African business leaders. B4SA, in turn, advises the National Logistics Crisis Committee established in June 2023 by government to address the country’s rail, port and road crises.
Agbiz/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index increases further in the fourth quarter

The Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz)/Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Agribusiness Confidence Index (ACI) increased by ten points quarter-on-quarter to 58 in the fourth quarter of this year. This is the second consecutive improvement and places the ACI at its highest level since the second quarter of 2022.

South African business must organise in a fully inclusive manner to take advantage of the opportunities of South Africa's chairing of the intergovernmental platform Group of 20 (G20) for the betterment of the country, the region and the African continent, business organisation the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) says. "Our big challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality will require South African business to pull together without leaving other formations behind, especially black business and the small, medium-sized and family-owned business sector, as broadly represented through the chamber movement," the organisation says.
McKinsey & co McKinsey, Busa join for G20 event after scandal

McKinsey & Co. is partnering with South African business-lobby group Business Unity South Africa (Busa) to prepare for an event aimed at connecting global policymakers, civil-society organisations and business leaders that will form part of next year’s Group of 20 (G20) gatherings. The partnership between the consulting firm and Busa comes after McKinsey this week agreed to pay more than $122-million to resolve criminal allegations tied to a corruption scandal. The impropriety involved former leaders of state-owned ports and rail operator Transnet during an era of endemic government graft, known locally as State capture.

The Africa50 Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF) has reached a new milestone, with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and pan-African group Axian having agreed to invest in the IAF.  The signings happened on the sidelines of the Africa Investment Forum Market Days in Rabat, Morocco, which took place from December 4 to 6.

Assembly line design and manufacturing company Jendamark Automation has signed an agreement with technology consulting and systems integrator Tech Mahindra to become a global partner for Jendamark’s Odin Manufacturing technologies, which are digital productivity and operational efficiencies solutions. The two companies will explore mutually productive commercial opportunities and look to collaborate on developing, implementing and supporting enterprise class solutions for identified customers across the globe.
IAEA experts commend Ghana for its commitment to nuclear safety

An expert mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has commended Ghana for being committed to continuously improving nuclear and radiation safety, as the country moves forward with its nuclear power programme. Ghana already has a Chinese-designed 30 kWt research reactor (designated GHARR-1, for Ghana Research Reactor) and uses radiation technologies in agriculture, healthcare, industry and research. The IAEA team was an Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission, composed of three IAEA staff members and 14 regulatory experts from 13 countries. The mission was headed by Thiagan Pather of South Africa’s National Nuclear Regulator. This was the first IRRS mission ever to visit Ghana, and it functioned as a peer review of the Ghanaian legal and regulatory frameworks covering nuclear, radiation, radioactive waste and transport safety, plus the interface between nuclear security and safety.

The Royal Society, in the UK, has provided funding to support a three-year collaborative roads project between the UK’s University of Nottingham (UoN) and South Africa’s Stellenbosch University (SU). The initiative aims to advance sustainable road construction methods in South Africa, focusing on improving mobility and furthering inclusive economic growth in rural communities.
