Airlines at South Africa’s busiest airport are unable to refuel their aircraft, raising the possibility of renewed delays just two days after pilots at the state-owned carrier ended a strike. The OR Tambo International Airport east of Johannesburg is experiencing “refuelling challenges,” Airports Company South Africa said in an emailed statement on Monday. More delays would lead to renewed concerns about potential disruptions during the peak December travel season. The South African Airways Pilots Association on December 7 ended a three-day strike that caused the State-owned carrier to cancel about 60% of its flights. SAA has since resumed its normal schedule.

During a media day hosted by the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz) on December 6, CEO Theo Boshoff said the sector would benefit further from political stability effected by the Government of National Unity, progress with rail reforms, improved energy security and South Africa’s positioning within BRICS and in leading the Group of 20 (G20) next year.
Image of Cyril Ramaphosa Ramaphosa reflects on government progress, notes slow pace of economic growth
Published: 09 Dec 24
President Cyril Ramaphosa pointed out on Monday that strengthening local government is the Government of National Unity’s key priority, noting disruptions in the supply of electricity and clean water in many districts. Ramaphosa wrote in his weekly letter to nation that many local councils are plagued by “poor governance, limited capacity and severe financial constraints”, all of which are affecting service delivery. He reflected on the progress government has made this past year and during the previous administration, which he said showed that it can overcome the difficulties the country is facing. Ramaphosa pointed out that the country has had over 250 days with no loadshedding, attributing this to a combination of increased maintenance and generation recovery by Eskom. He said this was also owing to the addition of more capacity to the grid from renewables, and the large-scale uptake of solar and battery energy solutions by households and businesses.
