A newly released report by technology and lifecycle solutions provider Wärtsilä shows that an area the size of Europe will need to be covered with renewable power to reach a clean energy future without the integration of balancing power technologies. Wärtsilä’s global power system modelling, published in the ‘Crossroads to net zero’ report, compares two pathways from 2025 to 2050 with the aim of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and limiting global warming in alignment with the Paris Agreement targets.
Macpherson to launch independent investigation into IDT tender award

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson will launch a full independent investigation into the Independent Development Trust (IDT) and its corporate governance problems to prevent any possible abuses and corruption going forward. He dismissed the IDT's plans to investigate the processes followed in awarding the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plant bids, as the board of trustees is currently not quorate and cannot investigate itself, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) said.
African countries again prominent on the list of those States blocking airline funds

Almost 60% of airline funds, blocked from repatriation by governments around the world, were being held back by African countries, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported. (IATA is the global representative body for the airline industry.) Of the global total of $1.7-billion in blocked airline funds, about $1-billion were being held by African countries. The total of $1.7-billion did represent a slight improvement over the total for blocked airline funds in April, which had been $1.8-billion. And there had been changes in the list of the worst-offending countries, with some falling down the list or even leaving it entirely, but others moving up it. Currently, just nine countries and currency blocs account for 83% ($1.43-billion) of all blocked airline funds.

Despite five subindices that turned slightly negative in November, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) Business Confidence Index (BCI) still improved by 3.4 points month-on-month in November. The index increased by 6.6 index points year-on-year in November, which is the largest year-on-year improvement for a month since the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in December 2022.

State-owned utility Eskom’s average energy availability factor (EAF) exceeded 60% for the seventh consecutive month in November. This milestone coincided with over 250 days without loadshedding and a significant reduction in open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) use this year, industry organisation Minerals Council South Africa points out.
A road in Eswatini AfDB approves $140m loan for Eswatini regional road infrastructure projects

Development finance institution (DFI) the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved a loan of $140.6-million to Eswatini for the first stage of a programme to improve road links and mobility at national and regional level in urban and rural areas. The road infrastructure investment will enable the upgrading of 105.9 km of paved roads. The new road surfaces will also be adapted to climate change, thereby enabling all-weather transportation locally and in the wider area.

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has reported that the aircraft refuelling system at OR Tambo International Airport, the country’s number one airport, located east of Johannesburg, has been restored to full operations. The Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) has separately highlighted that the failure of the refuelling system had caused long delays and forced the cancellation of some flights, at the start of the peak summer holiday travel season. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time and appreciate your patience and understanding,” said ACSA in its statement. “For passengers who may still be experiencing delays, we kindly advise reaching out directly to your respective airlines for further assistance. Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience.”
The Kariba dam Zimbabwe power users raise $250m for solar plan

Zimbabwe’s industrial power users have secured $250-million from the African Export-Import Bank to build floating solar panels at the world’s largest man-made lake. The Intensive Energy User Group, made up of mining companies including a former local unit of Rio Tinto and Mimosa, plan a 250 MW plant at the Kariba Dam to be implemented in 18 months, according to a copy of its presentation seen by Bloomberg. That can be expanded to 1 GW of solar capacity.

While South Africa is starting to see the fruits of energy sector reforms, it still has a long way to go to fix the water, and transport and logistics sectors despite recent progress, says business organisation Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) CEO Busi Mavuso. BLSA supported the National Logistics Crisis Committee (NLCC) in its efforts to develop the Freight Logistics Roadmap, with an important success being the establishment of the Transnet Rail Infrastructure Management company, with its own management and reporting structure separate from Transnet Freight Rail.

Development finance institution (DFI) the African Development Bank (AfDB) has released the first tranche of four of its $1-billion loan to State-owned Transnet as part of a financing arrangement to support Transnet’s business recovery plan. The funding will allow Transnet to start the first phase of its ambitious R152.8-billion, five-year investment plan to upgrade existing infrastructure while enhancing key logistic chain segments.
