Air passenger demand continues strong growth, reports IATA

Total air passenger demand grew by 13.8% in March, in year-on-year (y-o-y) terms, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports. (IATA is the global representative body for the airline sector.) International demand increased by 18.9% and domestic demand by 6.6%. Total passenger capacity went up by 12.3%, with international capacity rising by 18.8% and domestic capacity increasing by 3.4%. In March, the total load factor came to 82%, which was one percentage point higher than the figure for March 2023. The load factor for international flights was 81.6%, which was a 0.1 percentage point improvement on that for March last year. The domestic load factor was 82.6%, which represented a 2.5 percentage points increase over the March 2023 figure.

Shipping tycoon sees first Namibia hydrogen output by year-end

Cie Maritime Belge (CMB), a Belgian shipping company, expects green hydrogen production in Namibia to start in the fourth quarter, a project that could see $3.5-billion in investment over the next five years. Belgium’s King Philippe is on Thursday touring what’s expected to be Namibia’s first operating green hydrogen plant. The Antwerp-based shipping company seeking to power its fleet plans to open the first stage of the hydrogen fuel and ammonia project through a joint venture with Namibia’s Ohlthaver & List Group.

AMSA expects to break ground on Vanderbijlpark’s 200 MW solar plant this year

Steelmaker ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) is planning to start construction on a 200 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant at its Vanderbijlpark facility, in Gauteng, towards the end of the year, CEO Kobus Verster has told Engineering News. He explained that the installation would serve as one of AMSA’s first steps towards decarbonising the company’s energy requirements.

IATA reports continued strong air cargo growth in March

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported that March was the fourth month in a row in which global air cargo demand grew by double digits, in year-on-year (y-o-y) terms. IATA was the global representative body for the airline (including air cargo) industry. “Air cargo demand grew by 10.3% over the previous March,” highlighted IATA director-general Willie Walsh. “This contributed to a strong first quarter performance which slightly exceeded even the exceptionally strong 2021 first quarter performance during the Covid crisis. With global cross-border trade and industrial production continuing to show a moderate upward trend, 2024 is shaping up to be a solid year for air cargo.”

Absa PMI rises to 54 in April on the back of improved business activity

The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) improved to 54 in April, following a dip to 49.2 – below the neutral 50-point mark – in March, on the back of improved business activity, while better domestic demand filtered through to higher new sales orders. A full month of no loadshedding was likely positive for sustained business activity, says Absa, adding that, in all, the survey results reflect a good start to the second quarter of this year.

Baker Hughes builds first Namibian mud plant as exploration surges

Energy technology company Baker Hughes will construct a new liquid mud plant, and a separate assembly, maintenance and repair base at Namibia's Walvis Bay to cater to booming offshore exploration activities, a senior executive said. The project will help Namibia cope with an influx of drill rigs and support vessels that threatens to overwhelm its only two commercial ports, Walvis Bay and the smaller Luderitz, as they battle congestion and inadequate facilities.

Motsepe-backed GoSolr plans $537m South Africa expansion

GoSolr, a company backed by South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe and the continent’s biggest bank, plans to spend R10 billion to roll out a model of renting solar panels and batteries to homes in the nation plagued by blackouts. The two-and-a-half-year-old company seeks to install about 500 megawatts of solar-generation capacity in four years. That’s up from its current 70 megawatts, said Andrew Middleton, GoSolr’s chief executive officer. It has attracted investment and financing from Motsepe’s African Rainbow Capital Investments and Standard Bank Group. The company, which say it’s the biggest of its kind in South Africa, is one of a number capitalising on the power cuts and surging electricity prices that have afflicted the country since 2008. The amount of rooftop solar in South Africa more than doubled to 5 440 megawatts in March from the year earlier. About 620 megawatts of that was on residential properties, according to data compiled by the Johannesburg-based company.

Scientists explore how to improve crop yields – on Mars

For future human bases or colonies on Mars to be self-sustaining, a reliable source of home-grown food will be a must. It simply would be too costly and risky to rely upon rocket deliveries to meet the food needs of colonists. With this in mind, scientists are exploring ways to optimize space farming. In a controlled greenhouse at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, researchers have now identified a way that shows promise for improving crop yields in simulated Martian soil, with different crops grown together in a method called "intercropping" pioneered by ancient Maya farmers.
