DCT Pier 2 Transnet aims to defend its decision to partner with ICTSI at the DCT

State-owned Transnet has defended its decision to select Phillipines-based International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) as the preferred bidder for the establishment of a partnership to manage the upgrade and development of Pier 2 at the Durban Container Terminal (DCT). Following the selection of the preferred bidder, Transnet has entered into contract negotiations with ICTSI.
Africa Aerospace and Defence organisers confident of a successful 2024 exhibition

More than half of the exhibition space for the 2024 iteration of the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) trade exhibition and air show has now been booked, the organisers have announced. AAD 2024 will take place at Air Force Base Waterkloof, just south of Pretoria, from September 18 to September 22. The attendance of exhibitors from countries such as Belgium, China and the US has been confirmed. Among the major companies that will be attending will be Airbus, L3Harris Technologies, SAAB, and Turkish Aerospace Industries.

The end of oil is not in sight, OPEC's top official said, as the pace of energy demand growth means that alternatives cannot replace it at the needed scale, and the focus should be on cutting emissions not oil use. In an op-ed article in the Middle East Economic Survey (MEES) published on Friday, OPEC secretary general Haitham Al Ghais wrote there is "a worrying trend of narratives" that use terms like the end of oil, which have the potential to foster energy policies that stoke energy chaos.

Amid the energy challenges facing South Africa, residential solar energy company GoSolr says radical steps must be taken to secure the country’s energy supply and notes that solar energy will have a key role to play in ensuring security of supply. Transnet freight train Transnet volumes, revenue up, but falls short of recovery targets

State-owned Transnet has reported a 1.5% year-on-year improvement in the total rail volumes reaching 151.7-million tonnes at the end of March 2024, showcasing improvement in operational performance. However, this figure still fell 1.8% short of Transnet’s recovery plan target of 154.4-million tonnes for the 2023/24 financial year. Speaking at a media briefing at the Transnet Freight Rail headquarters in Johannesburg on Friday, Transnet group CEO Michelle Phillips acknowledged that while several metrics indicate positive momentum, challenges persist.

During a State of the System address hosted on Friday, Eskom confirmed its generation recovery plan (GRP) is making tangible progress, with various coal-fired power station units having been refurbished, repaired or optimised. Launched in April 2023 following extensive stakeholder engagements, including with power station managers, the GRP aims to address challenges affecting South Africa’s energy availability factor (EAF) within a two-year timeframe.
LHWP tunnel closure won’t have significant impact on water supplies, assures DWS

The upcoming six-month closure of the Lesotho Highlands tunnel, from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, for scheduled maintenance is not expected to have a significant impact or disruption on Gauteng’s water supply. The shutdown will result in an 80-million-cubic-metre shortfall during 2024 in the water supply from the critical Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) to the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS).

The City of Cape Town (CoCT) says its total proposed budget for water and sanitation for the upcoming 2024/25 financial year is R18.5-billion. Of this, R5.3-billion will be spent on capital projects, while R13.2-billion is allocated to operations.
