Varsity, private firm in partnership to develop protocol for production of radiopharmaceuticals
Published: 29 Mar 24
Stellenbosch University (SU) and high-tech company Enlightened Isotopes, a subsidiary of ASP Isotopes, have entered into an R8.5-million research partnership to develop a protocol for the separation of the ytterbium-176 isotope, to be used as a radiopharmaceutical in cancer therapy. Worldwide, isotope-producing companies are looking for alternative technologies as traditional sources, mostly nuclear reactors, are coming to the end of their life cycles.
PROJECT INVOLVEMENT
Engagement is a critical step in the construction and maintenance of mine shafts Correct installation of components critical
Published: 29 Mar 24
A successful shaft sinking project entails the correct installation of various components timeously, in addition to experienced personnel working on the project from the outset and maximising the time spent at shaft bottom, says fastener supplier Swagefast sales manager Neil Koen. The company’s involvement in projects such as the K4 Shaft at diversified miner Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef platinum group metals and nickel mine, in Limpopo, underscores the importance of specialised suppliers in ensuring the integrity and success of complex engineering projects, such as shaft sinking, he adds.
TRANSFER CHUTE INSTALLATION
Though transfer chutes may not be directly involved in the shaft sinking stage of development of a mine, they can used later during materials handling within the mine Company improves efficiency, safety in underground operations
Published: 29 Mar 24
There is a growing acknowledgement over the past few years that transfer points and chutes significantly influence overall process plant performance, says engineering company Weba Chute Systems, which adds that these components now command more attention owing to their potential to disrupt plant processes and incur high costs in downtime, maintenance and repairs. Weba Chute Systems provides transfer point solutions which will benefit contract miners for ore handling in underground mines.
KAROWE UNDERGROUND DEVELOPMENT
Lucara Diamond Corporation is expanding the Karowe mine to access the underground orebody, thereby extending the life-of-mine to at least 2040
Diamond miner progresses Botswana shaft sinking
Published: 29 Mar 24
Diamond explorer and miner Lucara Diamond Corporation made significant shaft sinking progress in 2023 at its Karowe underground project, in Botswana, where the miner invested $101.3-million for the year, focusing on development of the Karowe Underground Project (UGP). Development efforts in the fourth quarter of 2023 comprised mainly shaft sinking, lateral development and grouting programmes in both the ventilation and production shafts of the Karowe UGP.

Published: 29 Mar 24
Forty kilometres from the front line of the war in Ukraine, vertically integrated mining and metals company Metinvest has commissioned its eleventh longwall for coking coal in Block 10 of the Pokrovske Colliery, enabling the group of companies to produce almost one-million tonnes of coal. Pokrovske Coal CEO Andriy Akulich says the timely preparation of the new longwall is a “positive result of the long, hard work of every employee of the business”.

Published: 29 Mar 24
A prosperous future for the coal mining industry in South Africa depends on public and private sector parties tapping into its vast coal reserves, and power generation processes by State-owned power utility Eskom that comply with gas emission regulations, says nonprofit coal advocacy organisation FFF Carbon chairperson Professor Nicola Wagner. Repairing electricity-generating machinery efficiently must be prioritised to combat loadshedding, in addition to timely maintenance of generation plants to improve Eskom’s coal-fired power plant energy availability factor, Wagner adds.

Published: 29 Mar 24
Original equipment manufacturer for the mineral processing industry Multotec is making excellent headway in putting its SX10 spiral separator – which has been subjected to development processes over the past five years – to efficient use in local and international coal mining industries to prove its “value-add” bona fides, says Multotec process and applications engineering GM Christina Ramotsabi. The company’s recent projects include test work that has been conducted in South Africa, whereby Multotec sourced coal materials from various South African customers’ collieries to showcase the SX10 spiral separator’s ability to produce low-cut density coal product, which, in turn, leads to the production of a higher-quality coal for miners and processors.

Published: 29 Mar 24
Diversified miner Glencore’s South African coal mining division demonstrated its commitment to helping progress school learners through donations of key digital equipment. These donations include 20 laptops, ten smart phones and 25 tablets, provided to top performing learners at select host schools, thereby amplifying access to digital resources, fostering academic excellence and empowering communities and the youth.
TRIUMPHANT SHAFT SINKING
Reaching a final depth of 1 200 m, the new ventilation shaft sunk by Murray & Roberts Cementation at Palabora Mining Company is a triumph in many respects Last blast of new ventilation shaft celebrated
Published: 29 Mar 24
Underground mining contractor Murray & Roberts Cementation and its client Palabora Mining Company (PMC) completed the last blast in the development of the miner’s new ventilation shaft at PMC’s Lift II project, in Limpopo, which took its depth to a final 1 200 m below surface, in January. The 8.5-m-diameter upcast ventilation shaft – which holed through to an already developed return airway at depth – is vital to PMC’s Lift II project, which is intended to develop access to ore resources sufficient to extend the life of this copper mine beyond 2040.
Magazine cover image Gautrain Management Agency chief speaks on extension plans, service enhancements
Published: 29 Mar 24
The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) is re-engineering the company for full commercialisation while undertaking extension plans and pursuing enhancements for the Gautrain system, with many of these to be enabled by the appointment of a new concessionaire in 2026. This was outlined by recently appointed GMA CEO Tshepo Kgobe in an exclusive interview with Mining Weekly & Engineering News.
