Volkswagen is in talks with suppliers to secure direct access to raw materials for electric vehicle (EV) batteries via partnerships, one of its board members told Reuters on Tuesday. The world's second biggest carmaker is trying to exert more control over key components in its supply chain such as semiconductors and lithium so it can overcome any potential bottlenecks and keep its plants running at full capacity. The German carmaker is also trying to catch up with rivals such as Tesla and BMW which have already struck supply deals with producers of lithium, one of the main components in EV batteries.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the country will move to Level 3 lockdown from June 15. A curfew will be in place from 22:00 to 04:00 and gatherings will be limited to 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors.

Canadian miner Alamos Gold on Tuesday reported new results from surface and underground exploration drilling at the Island Gold mine, further extending high-grade mineralisation in Island East and West. At Island East, high-grade mineralisation extended 20 m from the nearest inferred resource block, over significant widths.

International organisation the World Economic Forum (WEF) on June 15 announced its 2021 Technology Pioneers, with 100 new technology firms included in the cohort for this year. The Technology Pioneers are young and growing technology companies taking on top global concerns with innovative technologies and business models, the WEF states.

As part of the cleaner, safer vehicles initiative of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), more than 300 vehicle fleets have been assessed for cleaner, safer mobility on more than 300 mines in five regions globally, ICMM health, safety and product stewardship director Sarah Bell reported on Tuesday. Bell was speaking to Mining Weekly in a Zoom interview on the ICMM's Innovation for Cleaner, Safer Vehicles initiative, which brings 28 of the world's leading mining and metals companies and 19 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) together to collaborate in a non-competitive space, to accelerate the development of a new generation of mining vehicles – and improve existing ones. Shoprite spends R700m over five years training more than 30 000 youths

Retail chain Shoprite Group has spent more than R700-million over the past five years on skills development and training programmes to enhance the career options of South Africa’s unskilled and unemployed youth. It has trained 24 308 people in its own Retail Readiness Programme, provided 1 027 bursaries and trained 5 765 young people, over the past three years, in the Youth Employment Service (YES) programme.

Mediclinic signs 12-year solar power purchase agreement

Private healthcare and hospital company Mediclinic on June 15 announced that it had signed a 12-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with sustainable infrastructure investment fund manager Moshesh Partners, to reduce the hospital group's energy costs. Mediclinic, based in South Africa and Namibia, contracted Moshesh Partners to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at six of its hospitals. This will ensure the hospitals have access to affordable and clean power.
