Infinium founder and CEO Robert Schuetzle. New boost for platinum group metals may arise from eFuel scale-up Has Video
Published: 19 Apr 24
The emerging use of elecrofuel (eFuel) as an interchangeable substitute for petrol, diesel and aviation fuel has the potential to create important new demand for Southern Africa’s platinum group metals (PGMs). This is because eFuel is a combination of green hydrogen and waste carbon dioxide (CO2) and where proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers are used to generate the green hydrogen, demand for PGMs will arise.
Codelco's head office Codelco eyeing more output, not competition with BHP, Chile's mining minister says
Published: 19 Apr 24
Chile's State-run copper miner Codelco must focus on boosting its production, but it has a global prestige that would not be tarnished if it cedes its role as Chile's top producer to rival BHP, Mining Minister Aurora Williams said on Thursday. Codelco, the world's largest copper producer and a symbol of national pride, is aiming this year to reverse two years of falling production in a bid to not only boost profits but also buttress Chile's sway over global markets.

The industries involved in tailings retreatment and the rehabilitation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are increasingly moving towards more sustainable and socially responsible practices, which are driven by technological innovation, says installation and monitoring of instrumentation specialist Terra Monitoring senior geotechnician Schalk Prinsloo. However, TSF operators have to navigate a myriad of challenges while having to ensure such facilities are safe and conform to industry integrity standards, which, in turn, are also becoming more stringent because of several high-profile incidents in recent years.
Tailings to meet critical minerals demand
Published: 19 Apr 24
The growing demand for clean energy technologies is anticipated to drive an increase in production of minerals, such as graphite, lithium and cobalt, with a portion of this demand being able to be met through the remining of tailings dumps containing those minerals, reports mine modelling solutions company IMDEX. International financial institution the World Bank estimates that more than three-billion tonnes of minerals and metals will be needed for the wind, solar, geothermal power and energy storage requirements of projects to be built to meet carbon reduction targets.
Magazine Cover Image Will the Zimbabwe Gold, or ZiG, restore currency confidence?
Published: 19 Apr 24
The heightened sense of urgency within Zimbabwe’s government to act as the country’s currency crashed – losing 90% of its value since the beginning of the year – was there for all to see in the past few weeks. The latest tell-tale sign was the assumption of office of the new central bank governor on March 28, a month earlier than the scheduled departure of his predecessor, to expedite the launch of a new unit. Unveiled on April 5 and set to enter into circulation by month-end, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) is described by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) as a “structured currency” that is backed by $285-million worth of reserve assets comprising $100-million in greenbacks, 1.1 t of gold in the bank’s vaults and an additional 1.5 t held abroad, as well as other precious metals.
