Making mining sustainable requires an ecosystem approach in which mining sector supply chain partners and service providers play their part to ensure mining benefits people, the planet and is profitable for companies, says mobility multinational Michelin Africa, India and the Middle East head of mining Fabien Taillardat. He cites Michelin as an example of a company in the ecosystem playing its role in furthering the development of sustainable mining practices and solutions.

Regenesys Business School on July 28 launched its EdForAll initiative – a technology-driven online higher education initiative delivering internationally recognised degrees, diplomas and certificate programmes from R500 a month to financially disadvantaged students across the world. The students pay the remaining fees once they gain employment or promotion after obtaining the qualification.
Transnet restores operations at ports after cyber-attack

South African State logistics firm Transnet has fully restored operations at ports following a cyber attack that forced the firm to declare force majeure at its container terminals, the Ministry of Public Enterprises said. The department said late on Wednesday that the main system responsible for container operations had been restored and that the force majeure was under review with the intention to lift it in the coming days.
Altron appoints CFO and chairperson

JSE-listed Altron has appointed Nicholas Bofilatos as Group CFO, effective July 29, succeeding Cedric Miller, while Stewart van Graan has been appointed chairperson, effective July 28, following Mike Leeming’s retirement. Bofilatos, who joined Altron in 2019 and was finance executive: change management, has more than 15 years’ experience in finance leadership positions and was previously Group CFO at Ctrack Holdings.

Agnico Eagle posted solid second-quarter results and remains on track to achieve its production and cost guidance this year, the Canadian gold miner reported on Wednesday. The Toronto-listed miner, which operates in Canada, Mexico and Finland, increased its second-quarter gold production from 331 064 oz in 2020, to 500 698 oz in 2021, excluding production from the newly acquired Hope Bay mine, in Nunavut. First-half production rose to a record one-million ounces, compared with 742 430 oz in the prior-year period.

Diversified mining company Anglo American on Thursday reported a record half-year financial performance in its position as the best of the world’s top-five global mining companies. Anglo calculates that its elevated global position is poised to continue, assisted by its superior depth, breadth and diversity. The record half year is some 70% better than ever done in six months in the past.
Meat import associations call for perishables to be moved to inland cold storage facilities

The South African Meat Processors Association (Sampa) and the South African Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE SA) have called for an action plan to ensure imported perishable food containers are re-routed to inland cold storage facilities, as KwaZulu-Natal facilities have been severely impacted by the recent unrest. There are currently 290 temperature-controlled reefer containers at the Port of Durban, which require an urgent cold storage remedy, the entities state.

Precious metals miner Agnico Eagle has signed a memorandum of understanding with a consortium to develop a renewable energy plan for its newly acquired Hope Bay mine, in Kitikmeot region of Nunavut. A consortium of Tugliq Energy and Hiqiniq Energy – a subsidiary of Inuity-owned economic development firm Kitikmeot Corp – will work towards the development of a wind-based power project.
Red River posts solid quarter

ASX-listed Red River Resources has reported a solid quarter at its Thalanga base metals project, in Queensland. Copper production from Thalanga in the June quarter reached 3 565 t, up from the 3 068 t produced in the previous quarter, while zinc concentrate production decreased slightly from 6 959 t to 6 311 t in the same period.
