Tailings to meet critical minerals demand
Published: 19 Apr 24
The growing demand for clean energy technologies is anticipated to drive an increase in production of minerals, such as graphite, lithium and cobalt, with a portion of this demand being able to be met through the remining of tailings dumps containing those minerals, reports mine modelling solutions company IMDEX. International financial institution the World Bank estimates that more than three-billion tonnes of minerals and metals will be needed for the wind, solar, geothermal power and energy storage requirements of projects to be built to meet carbon reduction targets.

Will the Zimbabwe Gold, or ZiG, restore currency confidence?
Published: 19 Apr 24
The heightened sense of urgency within Zimbabwe’s government to act as the country’s currency crashed – losing 90% of its value since the beginning of the year – was there for all to see in the past few weeks. The latest tell-tale sign was the assumption of office of the new central bank governor on March 28, a month earlier than the scheduled departure of his predecessor, to expedite the launch of a new unit. Unveiled on April 5 and set to enter into circulation by month-end, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) is described by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) as a “structured currency” that is backed by $285-million worth of reserve assets comprising $100-million in greenbacks, 1.1 t of gold in the bank’s vaults and an additional 1.5 t held abroad, as well as other precious metals.

Concurrent rehabilitation improves community relations
Published: 19 Apr 24
Midtier gold miner Pan African Resources’ concurrent rehabilitation at its Mogale tailings retreatment (MTR) project, located at the Mintails site, near Mogale City in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, is taking the steps required to repair relations with community stakeholders while ensuring value for the company and reducing damage to the environment. Through concurrent rehabilitation, as the miner processes old tailings dumps, areas are reclaimed and rehabilitated, thereby ensuring a greater availability of land for alternate uses, including for industrial, housing, agriculture and renewable energy projects, among other uses. The removal of legacy tailings dumps will also reduce the dust pollution which has been prevalent in the area for a number of years, as well as improve the ground water quality over time, as determined by expert independent studies, says Pan African investor relations head Hethen Hira.
