Pandemic can spur innovation in property sector

Although the pandemic has made it difficult for commercial and industrial property stakeholders to plan effectively for the future, this has led to great innovations, new approaches and renewed opportunities, says engineering services consulting firm WSP Africa regional director Johan Piekaar. “When looking to grow an avenue of a business, regardless of the state of the economy, it depends on managing risk and upfront capital investment versus the long-term return on investment.”

Amid the negative impact of Covid-19 on the retail property sector, real estate investment trust company Liberty Two Degrees (L2D) FD José Snyders says rental relief enables retail businesses to navigate the effects of the pandemic while ensuring that retail spaces remain appealing to the public. “Rent relief, in the context of last year, when we had various stages of lockdown with iterations of restricted trading or no trading at all, was very relevant and necessary.”

Railroad equipment supplier and manufacturer Gibela has not been immune to the challenges posed by the pandemic, particularly those presented by the third wave. “We have experienced a rise in cases within our company, which is impacting on operations. Most of our suppliers were also affected by positive cases and this affected our June performance, as material deliveries were delayed,” says Gibela corporate services and traction motor operation executive Dr Buyiswa Mncono-Liwani.

Compaction technology manufacturer Bomag has entrusted local equipment supplier Smith Power Equipment to distribute its light compaction equipment range in South Africa and selected cross-border markets, after the dealer agreement was signed at the end of 2019. Smith Power Equipment sales specialist Stephen Peyper highlights the Bomag single-direction vibratory plate compactors, designed for use in all earthworks, asphalt and paving applications.

Volkswagen SA sells 6 824 more vehicles in H1 than in same period last year

Volkswagen South Africa sold 32 603 vehicles in the first half of the year – 6 824 more than in the same period last year.  The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand has sold 29 772 units to date this year, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has sold 2 881 units. 
Sumitomo Rubber loses 70 000 tyres to looters

Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (SRSA), manufacturer of the Dunlop tyre brand, has warned consumers that goods stolen at its KwaZulu-Natal warehouse are currently being advertised for sale on social media and online classifieds sites. SRSA says that its Durban Westville warehouse was invaded and vandalised during the looting frenzy that took place in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng earlier this month.
