Canada’s oil industry seeks support from re-elected Trudeau
Published: 21 Sep 21
Canada’s largest oil and natural gas lobbying group is calling for support from re-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following an election campaign that featured vows to cut the industry’s emissions. “This election result reaffirms the uncertainty in Canada as we continue to struggle with public health and economic issues related to the Covid pandemic,” Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers CEO Tim McMillan said in a Monday statement, adding that the industry is ready to continue to work with the federal government to rebuild the economy. Trudeau’s platform included a promise to keep the industry on track for net-zero emissions by 2050, cut methane emissions by 75% from 2012 levels by 2030, eliminate fossil-fuel subsidies in two years and develop a plan to phase out public financing of the sector.

Published: 21 Sep 21
Iron-ore’s rollercoaster ride this year is set to end with a whimper as the contraction in China’s steel industry heralds further declines. The steelmaking ingredient was in the vanguard of this year’s commodities boom, but has plunged 60% from a record above $230 a ton in May. Curbs on steel output, alongside a property crackdown and concerns about a power shortage, have hammered iron-ore demand in China.

Published: 21 Sep 21
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says industrial policy and the quest for industrialisation belong back at the centre of the development agenda and are critical for meeting South Africa’s aspirations for higher levels of economic growth, job creation, transformation and development. The South African economy, the Minister said during an address on Tuesday, was unsustainable in its current state and part of government’s response required that emphasis be place on fundamentally transforming the structure of the economy – moving from low growth and labour-absorbing sectors to sectors of high growth and productivity, as well as greater labour absorption.

An image of Jennifer Granholm Top US energy official sees 'unusual partnerships' for nuclear
Published: 21 Sep 21
The Biden administration’s top energy official said the nuclear industry should broaden its business case beyond power markets in order to ensure its place in a carbon-free economy. US nuclear energy has come under relentless pressure in recent years from cheap natural gas, solar and wind power. More reactors are being taken offline permanently than built, risking the long-term future of the country’s biggest clean energy source. President Joe Biden has pledged financial support to keep aging atomic plants online. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said “building back better” for nuclear might mean more than just generating electricity as it competes with emerging renewable energy and storage technologies.
