An image of miners underground Court confirms ‘once empowered, always empowered’ principle
Published: 22 Sep 21
The Minerals Council South Africa has welcomed the High Court judgment that the Mining Charter was not binding legislation, but rather an instrument of policy and that mining companies will not be required to “top-up” their empowerment credentials. The Minerals Council has sought a judicial review of the third iteration of the Mining Charter, published in 2018, with its primary concern about the provisions on how previous black economic empowerment (BEE) are not recognised in the renewal and transfer of mining rights.
Creamer Media picture of Bruce Williamson Chip uncertainty causing PGMs price uncertainty – chief investment officer Has Video
Published: 22 Sep 21
The general feeling is that chip capacity will slowly start coming back in the next few months, but only to return the auto industry back to where it was pre-Covid, and not to the post-Covid surge, which resulted in platinum group metals (PGMs) prices going through the roof. If the global auto industry experiences an increasing delivery of chips, then the guess is that a bottoming out of the market can be regarded as being under way now, with gentle improvement to follow. Coal industry needs to acknowledge ‘just transition’, says Exxaro CEO-designate
Published: 22 Sep 21
Considering the polarising views on the coal industry’s importance, diversified mining and energy company Exxaro Resources CEO-designate Dr Nombasa Tsengwa believes the industry must acknowledge the “just transition” from coal to renewables as both a manner of going green, and a chance for mining companies to identify new opportunities. “Even though the just transition is necessary, there needs to be a holistic approach that considers the socio-economic transition. The industry needs to acknowledge that the just transition, and also going green, goes beyond just removing us from our balance sheets, thus reducing the attributable emissions,” Tsengwa said during her keynote address at this year’s Coalsafe virtual seminar on Wednesday.
Iron-ore storms past $100 as China soothes Evergrande concerns Iron-ore storms past $100 as China soothes Evergrande concerns
Published: 22 Sep 21
Iron-ore’s roller-coaster ride in 2021 shows no signs of easing, with prices ending an unprecedented slump to move sharply higher as investors monitor simmering debt troubles at China Evergrande Group. The developer’s onshore property unit said it reached an agreement with yuan bondholders on an interest payment, offering some relief after fears over Evergrande’s financial stability sparked a global flight from risk. China’s central bank also boosted short-term cash into the financial system, helping steady commodity markets.

Coalition puts pressure on govt to cancel plans for new coal-fired power
Published: 22 Sep 21
Environmental and climate justice groups have called on Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe and regulatory authority the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to abandon plans to develop 1 500 MW of new coal-fired electricity. “The development of new coal-fired power is neither rational, nor lawful, given the well-documented environmental, social, human health and economic impacts of new coal-powered electricity generation in South Africa.
