Akobo confident of small-scale mining potential with Segele exploration

Ethiopia-based gold explorer Akobo Minerals reports that it has found a continuation of a high-grade gold zone at depth, beneath the Segele mineral resource, with new assays demonstrating that the high-grade mineralisation extends to at least 145 m and quite possibly deeper. The resource estimate covered mineralisation in a narrow high-grade shoot from 30 m at the shallowest, to 130 m at the deepest.
International partnership to provide African SMEs with IT skills

Financial services group Ecobank Group has partnered with various organisations to provide training to equip small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across sub-Saharan Africa with digital skills and knowledge to succeed in today’s digital world. The partnership includes information technology multinational Microsoft, business network company LinkedIn, software development hosting company GitHub and Ecobank Academy.
Spar still determining full extent of damages following recent civil unrest

Multinational retail store company Spar is still determining the full extent of damages caused by recent civil unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng. So far, the group’s central office and all distribution facilities in the affected areas remain secure and are undamaged, the group confirmed on July 23.
Commodities boom presents opportunities for investors

The mining sector has emerged as a bright spot in the South African economy and investors are benefitting from this.   Specialist index fund manager 1nvest executive Johann Erasmus tells Mining Weekly that the recent commodities boom is attributable to a combination of delays in the global supply chain and increased consumer demand as economies are moving out of various levels of Covid-19-related lockdown.

South Africa should freeze investment in new private coal plants, as delaying South Africa’s “inevitable” transition away from the carbon-emitting energy mineral will cause economic damage, a new Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS) analysis on the country’s coal value chain states. Co-authored by TIPS economists Neva Makgetla and Muhammed Patel, the report argues that the coal sector is mired in a classic process of creative destruction, whereby disruptive technologies have developed to a point where older assets can no longer compete and ultimately have to be written off.
Eskom enhances its digital platforms

State-owned power utility Eskom has embarked on a digital journey to increase its availability and accessibility to its customers. The enhanced MyEskom Customer app and the introduction of Alfred the chatbot are the first of many digital solutions to be launched to enhance Eskom’s customer self-help channels, the embattled electricity provider said on July 23.

There are currently 12-million passenger electric vehicles (EVs) on the road. There are also more than one-million commercial EVs, including buses, delivery vans and trucks, and more than 260-million electric mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and three-wheelers in traffic globally.  This is according to BloombergNEF’s sixth long-term Electric Vehicle Outlook (EVO).

This yearly competition is backed by RES4Africa Foundation, Enel Green Power and the European Investment Bank (EIB). It encourages young entrepreneurs from across Africa to develop projects that expand energy access, enable greater use of renewable energy and accelerate sustainability.
Transnet working ‘around the clock’ to fix IT disruption

State-owned Transnet has identified and isolated the source of the disruption to its information technology (IT) systems and says technical teams continue to work “around the clock” to ensure the impact thereof remains minimal. Transnet on July 22 reported the disruption in some of its IT applications, saying only its container terminals were affected.
Commission conditionally approves Bright Minerals, Mogale merger

The South African Competition Commission has conditionally approved the proposed merger whereby miner Bright Minerals intends to acquire ferrochrome producer Mogale. Mogale was previously owned by Nasdaq- and London-listed specialist alloy producer Afarak Group, which placed its South African subsidiaries in business rescue in May 2020.
