Water Tap Water disruptions must not turn into another Eskom – Uasa

Trade union Uasa has warned that if Gauteng's water disruptions are not addressed soon, the situation could end up as “a second Eskom”. South Africa was introduced to loadshedding in 2007, after State-owned utility Eskom announced it would implement rolling blackouts to avert the collapse of the national energy grid owing to insufficient generation capacity.

South African specialist microsatellite high-speed communication systems company Cubecom, part of the Alphawave Group, has announced that it has secured “substantial orders from multiple high-profile international space institutes” for its leading-edge High Data Rate Transmitters for microsatellites. It did not divulge the number nor the identity of its customers. “Securing these orders is not just a business milestone for Cubecom; it’s a validation of decades of hard work, innovation, and relentless pursuit of excellence by our team, and also by so many other local companies like us in our industry,” enthused Cubecom Chief Technology Officer Sampie Booysen. “We have enjoyed a revenue growth of 89% after launching our flagship product, the Microsatellite High Data Rate Transmitter (µHDRTX), which was onboard SpaceX’s Transporter-6 into orbit in January 2023, on a groundbreaking microsatellite mission.”

A Native American group has asked all members of a US appeals court on Monday to overturn an earlier ruling that granted land to Rio Tinto for a copper mine in Arizona, saying the land was sacred and culturally significant. A ruling from a smaller group of the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals had earlier this month ruled that the federal government may give away thousands of acres in US state Arizona to Rio Tinto and minority partner BHP for the Resolution Copper project.

Volkswagen Group Africa (VWA) will invest R4-billion in its manufacturing plant in Kariega, in the Eastern Cape. The investment will be used to prepare the plant for the addition of a third model to the company’s production line-up from early 2027.

German coal mines spew 184 times more methane than what the country reports to the United Nations, according to a new analysis by Ember. The energy think tank used methodology developed by scientists that takes into account the gas content of coal and mining depths to estimate the emissions, which cast fresh scrutiny on Germany’s strategy of pivoting towards fossil fuels in the wake of Japan’s 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Canada-headquartered Barrick Gold has announced its preliminary figures for the first quarter of 2024, reporting gold output of 940 000 oz and copper output of 40 000 t. Gold production fell by 12% quarter-on-quarter, which Barrick attributed to planned maintenance activities at its Nevada Gold Mines, in the US, and adjustments in mine sequencing across various sites.

The sale by Southern African diamond mining company Petra Diamonds of an exceptional blue diamond in its fifth tender cycle lifted the average prices per carat received 22% higher than those of the prior Tender 4 sale. The London Stock Exchange-listed company, headed by CEO Richard Duffy, reported on Tuesday that the price upliftment was the result of a remarkable14.76 ct exceptional clarity diamond, recovered from Cullinan diamond mine in Gauteng, fetching $8.2-million.
Drilling confirms proof of concept at African Pioneer, FQM’s Zambia JV

Exploration and development company African Pioneer has provided an update on exploration conducted and funded by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) during the six-month period to December 31 over licences in Zambia, with drilling confirming proof of concept that licences are in the right lithology confirming Congo-style mineralisation. The licences are within both the fold and thrust belt and Western Foreland, and are covered by the option agreement entered into by African Pioneer and FQM and which are held by African Pioneer’s 80%-owned subsidiary African Pioneer Zambia.
Afrimat to report higher full-year earnings

JSE-listed Afrimat expects to report a 21% to 26% year-on-year increase in headline earnings a share to between 553.6c and 576.5c for the financial year ended February 29. Earnings a share are also expected to be between 11% and 16% higher year-on-year at between 507.3c and 530.2c.
